With all the problems children have these days and all the time it takes the teacher or staff member away from what they were hired to do which is teaching ,they need to be paid 10 times more than what they are being paid now.

You can tell what is important to a society based on the amount of money invested to promote it's success. If America truly valued education, teachers would be better paid than sports stars and movie stars. It would be nice if the politicians gave out teacher raises as readily as they give themselves raises. Teachers have been ignored for ages because it is a field made of mostly women and their salaries are seen as mostly supplemental to a man's. Those days have changed. Many people think that teachers have a long summer. Not any more. Most teachers spend a majority of the two summer months taking continuing education courses. That is longer than congress is in session.

Absolutely, teachers are people too. They chose the teaching profession because they want to share their knowledge with the next generation. They chose to become a teacher because they are willing to stay up late grading papers. They know that they will have to deal with some immature kids but are willing to take the stress. In my opinion, they should be paid more for all of their hard work for the future generation. I mean, they could just make it easy for themselves by going into accounting right? But they chose to become an educator.

In California, they have huge promotions for the "First Five" program, touting the need for preschools and quality education for children under 5 years old and stressing the extreme importance for children. Unfortunately these are the most underpaid teachers, which results in a high turnover rate. Why stress the importance for children to be cared for by quality teachers if you can't get any? The states are requiring higher and higher educational standards for teachers, and yet, when teachers reach the levels, they are not being adequately compensated for the astronomical job that they do. Preschool is the toughest age to teach, the most important period in the child's life for learning, and yet, the people who dedicate their lives to helping the youngest citizens are not given the respect they deserve. In my opinion, we need to turn around our country's priorities. Stop paying football and basketball players millions and turn our attention to the future of this country- and the people who teach them.

Yes, their classes are increasing, money in budget for school supplies and books is decreasing, and parents expect teachers to teach the children manners and respect as well as reading, writing and arithmetic. Many children are encouraged to question, talk back to, and disrespect their teachers. The teachers can't get through the required curriculum, let alone spend extra time with children who need it. Most children are not taught critical thinking skills at home, or to sit still and listen. I feel for the teachers.

Not only should they be paid more, they should have better benefits and incentive bonuses for when their kids do well on standardized tests. Most kids don't want to learn on their own, if all kids were eager to learn the job would be much easier, but as it stands now, teaching is one of the most difficult jobs there is. Do we really need another nuclear powered air craft carrier at the cost of $3 Billion? It will be a great day when schools have all the money they need and the Navy has to hold a bake sale to raise money for another submarine.

I teach and can see both sides of this debate. But when you think about it this way it sort of holds true: you wouldn't be where you are today if you didn't have a teacher.

Doctors save lives, lawyers defend lives, psychologists analyze lives, yet teachers do all this and get crapped on.

Ahhh the joys of my profession!
