If you are using Windows XP, right click on your desktop, go to the "Desktop" Tab and at the bottom click Customize Desktop, now tick the "Internet Explorer" choice and then say "OK". This works on Windows ME too i think. If this doesn't work for some reason. There might be a problem with your internet explorere. Download it from Microsoft's website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/default.mspx. (Don't take the IE 7 beta its got lots of problems). There are other browsers too.. try Firefox for a change !! Its really good

Click on the start menu, go to settings, and into the control panel.
From there, open the Internet control panel and click on the last tab, Advanced.
Under the "Browsing" header, make sure "Show Internet Explorer on desktop" is checked.
Alternatively, you can open web pages by going to Start, Run, and typing in the URL of the web site you want to visit.

You should have an Internet Explorer icon in your quick launch toolbar next to the Start button. Right click the taskbar (the big blue band at the bottom of your screen), select Properties and put a tick in the box next to "Show Quick Launch". Press apply, press ok. You will now have an internet explorer icon next to your Start button. use it to launch your browser and get on the web.

i.e. is deeply woven into the windows environment, and likely not lost, but what you want is a shortcut icon on your desktop. go to 'start' and here you'll find the program. just drag and drop onto the desktop, and it automatically makes a shortcut.
