Java comes from the Island of Java, which is main island of Indonesia and is a major producer of coffee, so coffee eventually got the nickname "Java". Then, when they were trying to come up with the name for a web-based application program, the programmers had been pulling all-nighers for so many months and drinking tons of coffee (or Java, if you will) to stay awake, they decided to call it Java.
