We are a young very active, outdoorsy family with a 3 year old little girl. We go camping and ski boating alot. We would like to take a dog with us. I go to school in the mornings this semester and work 3rd shift however, my husband would be home at night. So really the dog would only be home alone in the mornings and if I have any errands to run in the afternoon. I really just want a mellow dog that's along for the ride. I hate it when dogs jump all over me or my company. What do you think the best breed would be for us?

Labs tend to be great animals for outdoor activities, are fun and friendly with kids. But if you want one that is a little bit more tame we've had a great cocker spaniel. She wasnt "play with me" "play with me" play with me" as labs tend to be. She was a bit more independent but still loved to be involved with the kids and camping stuff. Best of Luck!

Golden retreiver. I researched this alot. I was looking for a dog with a good temper and good with kids and NOT yippy. Lily is the best dog. My boys are 4,7 and 13. They jump on her and wrestle with her and she just lays there. Someone once told me that to get a golden to bite a kid they (the child) would have to be trying to cut the dogs foot off. I believe it, my 4 yr old (then 2 1/2) decided to take the dog with him to his room and was pulling her there by her tail. We have hardwood floors so she couldn't get any traction to get away so was just letting herself be pulled along with a sad, resigned look on her face. Of course when I came out of the kitchen and saw what was going on I stopped it. She also just lays around most of the day while the kids are at school (even when there home, if their calm) but when they are ready to play she is always up for it. Retreivers are slao water dogs. We take ours camping and fishing and she loves it and behaves very well.

A labrador retriever, golden retriever, irish setter - any of the bird dogs make great, gentle companions and love the outdoors. The do take a while to settle down, though - so if you're looking for mellow, you might consider adopting an older dog who's already settled.

You are looking for a Lab
make it a male---females don't like being alone AT ALL and will find a way to make you pay even if it's for a little while
they are loyal---train very well (do this between the ages of six months and a year) and will be extremely protective of the little one and bond rapidly with your entire household

Border collies are medium sized. Good for travel. Love to be with people. Are probably the most intelligent of all breeds. I have had three and very little training was needed due to the fact they seem to know what you are saying. They are extremely willing to please. Don't shed. What more can I say. They are great.

Definitly a golden Lab.. Best family dog I've seen myself.. I had a border collie growing up and they are great too, but mine was a bit hyper. Was a very great dog though.
