I'm almost positive that a police officer can be undercover in every single state, and thus able to lie about being a police officer. A police officer would never be able to stay undercover if you could just ask them and they had to tell the truth. So I'm pretty sure that asking is the biggest waste of time. They'll lie, and they're allowed to.

Its whats known as an urban myth. If a law enforcement official is asked if he is a cop and he says no, it is still legal if he is playing a role and NOT "entrapment"as some people think.
This is true in every state.
In other words, if you are a hooker or drug dealer and ask an undercover if he/she is a cop, they can say "no", and you can still be busted and have the eveidence stand up in court.
Its an urban myth...nothing more.

An undercover cop will not have to announce that he is an officer. That would cause many unfortunate "accidents".
