For young babysitters: how old are you, are you still in school, what are your grades like, who are your parents, what do your parents do for a living, do you smoke or drink, what do you do for fun, have you ever been arrested or gotten a traffic ticket, where do you live, what will you do in case of an emergency, how do you feel about spanking?

For adults: where do you work (if they work) and how long have you been on the job, do you have any children, have you ever lost a child, have you ever been arrested, what is your marital status, what do you feel about spanking, what do you think is a good curfew for a teenager on school nights and then on the weekends, do you smoke or drink?

And anything else you can think of, after that is your child that someone else will be watching and you can never be too careful, also install a hidden camera if they are keeping your child in your household

First for at least three references each of a personal and a former adult they babysat for and then call these people and ask what they were like if they were dependable and why they no longer babysit for that person. Then go with the what is your driving record, if they will have the child in a car. Ask if they know basic CPR asd first aide, what would they do in various emergency situations, what are their styles of discipline. Ask them WHY they want to care for a child and make sure it isn't just for money. People who generally care about children keep them because they want to and love being around them not because they can make a few bucks. Last make the interview at a time where you can leave the child in the room with the person while you straighten another room and see how they connect with each other. Last if after you hire them you have any doubt they are not right for your child get them out of there a parents intuition is usually not wrong.

Ask about there family, get a feel of her family life. Does she have brothers and sisters, expecially younger ones. Introduce her to your children, if the kids dont like her its a BIG NO NO! Has she babysat before, get references and by all means check them out. If she has babysat before ask her if she uses time out or spanks children when they have done something wrong. Find out what methods she uses. What she does incase of an emergency. Ask her about school one of the best references you can get is from teachers. First time you use her to babysit, hire her for a few hours to watch them while you do something around the house. Or that your only gone for a very short time. Let the kids get to know her and you will too. If your kids arent comfortable around her you will never be either. Best babysitter you will find is one that will ask you questions.

i guess i'm a little paranoid, b/c i was sexually abused as a child, so i don't really leave my daughter with anyone i don't already know and trust...

if you're looking for just a babysitter, the best thing is to have the daughter of a family you know take care of your kid...
if you're looking for someone to take care of your kid throughout the week while you work b/c u don't like daycare, i would try someone i know first but if not possible, i'd see if people i know can refer anyone to me....if still not possible, then i would ask to go to that person's house and see how they interact with their kids and stuff...
i don't think i would ask questions, so much as watch their mannerisms...anybody can lie to you...but when caught off-guard, you'll see what a person's really like...
i would most definitely choose a woman over a man...

Everyone gets frustrated and angry once in a while. What you want to know though, is what do they do when they feel angry? How do they handle it when they are frustrated with their own child?

If they deny that they EVER feel angry, they might not be telling the truth!

Ask questions like, "what would you do if...."

----my child would not stop crying
--- my child fell down and hurt her knee
---my child was hungry and it wasn't meal time
---my child was missing me

And then, see how you feel about the baby sitter's answers. Of course there is no real right or wrong answer, but, you will know how you feel about their answers and trust your gut!

Best wishes!

Do you have any younger siblings? Are you familiar with taking care of children? Have you ever babysitted for anyone? Do you have flexible hours? Would you be interested in babysitting my child? If so, how much would you want to be paid?
