does having a child raise there hands over there head prevent them from choking, and if so how?

It changes the position of the item they are choking on and possibly gets it out of the way so you can catch your breath and cough it up

It opens their airway wider so the food is more easily dislodged. Also it let's the people around them know they are choking, sometimes when you are choking you are unable to speak. Peace.

I don't think this is standard procedure any more. I believe it was something that people did before we learned the Heimlich maneuver, and the intent was to stretch-out and therefore open up the airways. Nowadays, however, we know better. If you don't know it, please learn the Heimlich maneuver, as it may save the life of someone you love.
