on the scene fingerprints are done with a light dusting of fingerprint powder, it comes in a variety of colors to be used on differnt materials and color backgrounds.
after the fingerprint is located, it is lifted off with a wide tape, and then taped to a fingerprint card that shows where the fingerprint was taken at and also who took it along with the date.

If you have watched "CSI", they use a powder that highlights the fingerprint but doesn't affect it.
An impression is taken on an adhesive tape strip and is run through the data base for a match.

There are many different ways to get latent prints . Powder is a common method.
