Tell me about your medial miniscus surgery?
I am scheduled for surgery on my medial miniscus. How long was your recovery? How long was your physical therapy? What do I need to know about this surgery before I have it? Any tips on a quick recovery?

Length of physical therapy, recovery time, etc really depend on your pre-op status and if there are other co-morbidities involved.

In a normal, healthy adult with no other diagnoses, you should be off crutches in 1-3 days and walking normal. Physical therapy lasts 3-6 weeks and goals are usually to decrease pain and swelling, increase ROM and strength.

Advice for a fast recovery:
- Ice 15 minutes every hour with your leg elevated above your heart level while the knee is still swollen.
- Go to physical therapy. Do your home exercise program religiously. Studies have shown a quicker recovery for this surgery in patients who went to PT than those who did not.

General Procedure for Evaluating the Knee

Take a thorough patient history, and inquire if any acute injuries have occurred. If injury is present, the way in which the knee was injured and how it was treated should be reviewed. Frequently, the circumstances surrounding a knee injury (sport, field conditions, surface, etc.) can be very indicative of the specific area injured.
Perform a manual exam. There are many techniques and tests to individually evaluate the different ligaments, tendons, menisci, etc. (discussed below). Although an injured area may be quite obvious and definitive, the manual exam must be performed thoroughly to insure that any other pathology is not overlooked.
After the physical exam is complete, decide if more information is needed to make a comprehensive and more definitive diagnosis (e.g. x-ray, MRI, CT Scan).

Funny you should ask. A friend of mine has or is about to go under the knife for this. I had never heard of it before. He is a dedicated runner, but he got this from playing basketball. He said the hardest part was getting scheduled for the surgery. Once it is performed he should be running the next day. There are no lasting physical effects for this. Once that flap of cartilage is removed there is no more irritation and you should be good to go. But ask nevertheless. I am not a doctor, but I play one on the internet. Recovery time should be minuscule.

I had surgery on my miniscus back in sept of 05, it was virtually painless, healing time was quick as long you keep the bed rest as your supposed to , keep it iced, but when it comes time to start physical thereapy make sure you do it dont procrastinate as i did it mad it harder for me to get moving, but the younger you are the less it will hurt and the faster your recovery.
