I want a puppy and I love yorkies so much, but have heard mixed reactions. If I shouldn't get one...then what other type of dog should I get and why?

Teacup poodle - more intelligent

First of all, there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. They are not a separate breed. There are only Yorkshire Terriers. When someone gets a tiny one they often refer to it as teacup, but thats really just a term someone has come up with, not anything specific to the breed.

Yorkies are nice little dogs but make sure you buy one from a reputable breeder that provides a health guarantee. They have several health problems that are prevelant in the breed, including liver shunt and patella luxation.

Go to a dog show in your area and look at some yorkies and talk to some breeders. Most are very honest as to whether they think a yorkie would be a suitable breed for your lifestyle as they are also concerned that the puppy is being matched to a good home.

i am i totall yorkshire terrier fan too!

Well on the + side teacup yorkies are small , show material , cute and fun to dress up!

On the down side they are easy to step on / lose. Because they are so small they can catch sicknesses easier sometimes easier then other dogs.

If i were you i would get a medium sized yorkie. They are MUCH more affordable and still so cute! Remember that even though meduim is considered 4-8 lb. That is still very small!

Either way just make sure you get a good breeder and a nice dog. No matter what if your puppy has a good personality it was be a great Best Friend!

Hope that helps!

OK, I first need to explain to you that the term "Tea Cup" has no real meaning. Tea Cup is not a standard for any breed. This has become a slang term used for a very tiny specimen of the breed. Many of these ultra-small specimens are not the healthiest in the litter. I would be wary of any breeder using this term.

That said, as to Yorkies in general. These are the smallest recognized dog breed. As pups they have to eat very frequently as they are prone to low blood sugar. They are prone to dental problems, so plan to have the teeth cleaned frequently. Also they tend not to lose the baby teeth and will grow 2 complete sets of teeth. This really screws up their bite. Eye problems and allergies are also an issue as is very dry skin. They require a lot of grooming. And you have to do it or pay to have it done every 4-6 weeks. Daily combing really helps. Can be hyper and yappy, depends on if the owner bothers to train them. They are so small they think they can get away with everything.

Hi there having a yorkie which is smaller then usual can be prone to low sugar levels. One of my baby yorkies died because his sugar was low. Also they are not to be breed because they are prone to complications.
Make sure when people visit they know you have a small dog and that will let out a caution for her/him not to be stepped on.
Watch the fridge door when opened they like to poke their heads in and see inside. So be careful when you slam it shut.
They are very hard to potty train as well and
They are very expensive you're looking at the $1000.00 or more for a small yorkshire.
But if this is the house dog you will be getting congradulations. She/he is a great best friend. Mine sleep on the head of the bed, goes in my purse for travel, and loves being out doors along with being indoors.

I had a teacup yorkie and absolutely loved her.
But she was so small that you basically have to treat them like a newborn baby, They are very, very delicate and can break their bones very easily (just by falling off the couch or something like that)
They also tend to have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and can go into convulsions.
If you are not prepared to dedicate alot of time and energy on this dog then you should not get one.

I take care of several teacup Yorkies at the dog day care/boarding kennel...They are ALL on daily medications.
The Yorkie is a small dog by the breed standard...When breeders decided to make them even smaller, they bred their smallest ones (runts) to other runts..Every 'runt' is undersized for a reason, usually kidney malfunction or pituitary malfunction, etc...So, by breeding for size, rather then over-all health and conformation, they are breeding sick dogs to sick dogs...and it becomes a 'breed' of reduced sized Yorkies, with many genetic problems.
You asked about another small dog? How about a standard sized Yorkie? they are still plenty small. the AKC breed standard says that they must not exceed 7 pounds. the regular sized Yorkie is still considered a Toy breed.
take a look at these champions>>>http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-18,GGGL:en&q=champion%20yorkshire%20terriers&btnG=Search&sa=N&tab=wi
What's not to love! ?

Yorkies are great pets... "Teacup Anything", means that their bladder is the size of a small peanut shell... Their hearts beat like hummingbird wings, and they "tinkle" when; startled, happy, old, sick, etc... They are like portable sprinkler systems...

They are hyper (cause blood is rocketing through thier bodies) and protective...

So if you like a constantly peeing rat sized dog, go for it... otherwise- just go for the yorkie (normal sized).

My friend has a Yorkie named Bonnie and she is the friendliest dog ever and only one thing bad ever happened to her. And that's when she was attacked by a bigger dog, she was in pretty bad condition but she turned out fine. I don't know what happened to the dog that attacked her.
