My fiance's brother, who is 17, has effectively dropped out of high school. He has been "home schooled" for his entire life, but this means he has little to no education since his parents basically just let him sit at home all day every day and do nothing. Before I continue, I also was home schooled and my parents did a great job. I graduated at the top of my class in high school and have done very well in college. However, it's people like his parents that ruin a good thing. They think education is stupid and unnecessary. What can I do to convince him not to quit and also to convince them not to encourage him in ruining his life?

tell him people with education are the ones with the good jobs... people with no education are the ditch diggers, and laborers.. I am sure your town has lots of people that have no homes, and live on the streets... these basically are people with no education...that is one thing that cannot be replaced is education... get it while you are young.. as you can never go back and get it...when you get older and need a grade 12 level for something and you are 40 years old... you will be by passed and the one with the education will get the promotion... seen it happen all the time... work experience is good ... but not when it comes time for promotions....

Take him to min wage jobs ...show him what he will have to do to earn a living... take him to a low income housing...show him what he will have to live in....take him to daycares ...show him how much he will have to pay..
Put it in writing ! What he could make at the most with no education. What basic needs will cost like housing, gas , groceries, power bill.
Make it real!
Show him this response...this is true by the way
I was a high school drop out at 17, got a job, moved out and realized I would never make it anywhere since everywhere I went required education for a decent job.
Went back to school the next year, graduated with med to low grade but i graduated....in 95...got married...worked...got pregnant and worked b/c my hubby was a high school drop out...so it took both of us working to pay bills...started college in 2000.. part time b/c I had to work...got pregnant again...worked ..kept going part time to college...went to private massage school and jr college and worked 2 part time jobs.. now own my own business...am now going back to college working on going to med school...
Reality...If he chooses not to go to school...he will work hard all his life and scrape by because he truly knows no better, he is only 17...
thats where you obviously have given him a chance to see differently...hopefully he will see! Good Luck

yo you can show him how much of a better life he can have if he stays in school. tell him if he wants a relationship how would he cope or with a child. does he not want to see his children grow in a well raised and smart family. if hes not the (planning for future guy) forget all i have just said and say how easier his life will be if he stays. remind him of the money in future carriers that all ways works. and for his parents use the guilt trip on them say if they truly love their son and want to make him happy let him study. say it will be hard but it will be worth it. that's my answer. sorry i am just a young teen so the whole thing might not work. sorry for the spelling and how long its been i talk to much

Tell him he will not get anywhere in life without a high school diploma and a lot of things he might want to do as an adult he won't be able to do.
