Probably. I am going to start watching a 9 year old next week.
Go with 12 to abide by laws, go with 14 just to be sure.

Nine is too young. I don't think you can legally stay by yourself until you are at least 13. But I think that 15 or older is a good age to start babysitting. At that age you can emotionally handle the responsibility of taking care of a younger child.

Definately. I have a 5 and 6 yr old myself, I would not leave them with anyone less than 16. I still remember being 14 and babysitting...I was too young then too. I was not mature enought to know how to handle certain situations. Especially for small children and babies.
If you are interested in babysitting for a couple hours at a time for someone, definately take a course in CPR and first aid. Check on classes that prepare you specificaly on babysitting.

the legal age is 12, but sometimes even a 12 year old isn't qualified to care for another child. On the other hand, I have seen 9 yr olds capable of babysitting, although I wouldn't take that chance.

12 is legal age to babysit in the home of others. You need to be 10 to babysit at home (younger siblings) . Even then parents must supply a phone number for immediate contact.

Um, yeah, I have a nine year old (almost ten) and she is definitely not old enough, nor are any of her friends her age. She helps me out with her brother and sister a lot, but I'm always around. I'd say 13 or 14 is a better age.

9 is too young to leave alone in a house, so certainly too young to babysit.
Not too young to be hired as a "mother's helper" - to play with and distract a baby or small child while the mother does other things around the house.
