I think my mom was the first bilingual person in my family. She tried to have my dad learn a second language.... After that came my older sister, then me, then my two younger sisters.... Then came my three nephews.

Then I met my wife who had been bilingual since she was 4.

It is just a wonderful thing to be part of the bilingual world.

There are no names because its impossible to trace such a person who existed prior to written history but its safe to say the first people to learn other language were most likely traders. Another would have been people captured in war and forced to become slaves thus learning the language of their captures by force.

I was raised in a biracial family, multiracial & multilingual neighborhood. Homogeny is uncommon and much-criticized in my country, and oh, everyone here is *at least* bilingual

It has been that way since 1950s
