Missile is something that has a trajectory and is intended to hit a target. Rocket is something that is fired to launch a desired load at a high altitude. The intended purpose of usage is different. A rocket needs to have speed and reach a high altitude. Whereas a missile can use whatever trajectory and hit a target.

As a former missileer and a current rocketeer in the Air Force, I can definitively say that a missile is an offensive or defensive weapon system, and a rocket is used as a delivery system to carry a spacecraft or a payload.

Missiles have guidance systems, rockets do not and are launched in the general direction of the target.

both guidance and size play a factor in the difference. A missile will usually have a set target and a guidance system to get it to that target and a rocket is fired in the direction of the target, more simply, its aimed and then projected at the target.

I was going to lay out a VERY complicated definition of missiles and rockets..but then got to thinking....and the first dude kinda summed it up in one word. Well done.

A rocket is launched into space, free of Earth's gravity. A missle is launched with an intended trajectory to return to Earth at a designated point.
