Racist have certainly used religion to do their dirty work, look at the South, and Religion has always been the perfect cover for Racists, look at Israel and the Palestinian and Lebanese issue.

It is not supposed to be. However, we have records of the Mormom church discriminating against blacks by forbidding them from joining the Mormon priesthood until 1978. There was suddenly a revelation from God saying that it was not right. Also about that time the Latter Day Saints were proseletyzing in Third World countries where the population is generally non-white. They would not make many converts if most of the people could not become priests, simply for picking the wrong ancestors.

My own religion, Catholicism, generally held Jews in low regard for a long time because they were accused of killing Chirst (when it was the Romans). Fundamantalists often practice racism by quoting the bible, especially the Curse of Ham/Cannan from genesis.

Hey B.W.,

I believe RELIGION is racist. If it weren't then you would not have killings/ethnic strife based on the will of God/god/a god.

However, racisim is a learned trait. We are not born that way!

So, maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks. Racisim can be unlearned...It just takes an open heart :-)

James

P.S.

Oops, Lou 300;

You say that religion SHOULD teach tolerance. It usually doesn't. If it did, you wouldn't have them demonstrating against such things as gay marriage, Terry Shaivo, or shouting down people at Military Funerals (Westboro Baptist Church).

Sorry!

Definition of Religion:
re·li·gion ( P ) Pronunciation Key (r-ljn)
n. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Religion is not rascist, people are. People pick and choose parts of scripture to follow and leave out others or get too extreme or too relaxed and thus new religions are born.We mustn't forget that God does not care weather we are Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Baptist, Mormon ect...He looks at the hearts of men, He's the only one who can.

Organized religion, by and large, is rather racist.

Anyone here who says otherwise has to learn a history lesson!

The black folk, in virtually EVERY part of America and England, were not allowed to be with the White Folk in them White Churches until later in the 1900's. In some instanced ingegration did not occur in "nothern and western" areas until around 1960.

They sat in the blacony!

FAct of life!

Why else do you think so many black turned to Islam!

Now, in the black churches most didn't care much. A white person wanted to come in, it was with mixed feelings. Most thought it was nice. A few taunted them. A few got hostle, but the majority supported it.

Not so in the white churchs!

Do this day in the North and West and most of Scandinavia and Europe, most fathers don't want their White Daughter to Marry one!

This is dying out, but it's still a fact of life today.

Racist is not a pure word. Is religion bigoted and prejudiced. That's a better concept.

You let Gays sit with the Straight folk in your church?!

Now we getting down to something!

The Butch girl with her Butch girl friend comes in. You give em a hard time?

The queer boy with his lover boy comes in. You give em a hard time?

I don't mean if they are kissing or fondling. I mean if they come in in a suit and tie, sit there quietyly and join in song. You give the queers boys a hard time?

Not all religion falls into this, but TO BE SURE, any METHODIST or WHITE BAPTIST or WHITE PRESBYTERIAN church who so much as tried to HIDE the fact they INTEGRATED their seating in the year 1875 would NOT be allowed to be a part of the body poltic!

Look, today, the Anglican Church is on suspension for ordaining Gay Bishops and they fear further reprisals with the Church of England for now ordaning Women Bishops!

Why? Because they didn't get the Body Politic to approve these moves in advance! They didn't ask MOTHER MAY I?

So the Episcopals have SUSPENDED the Angelicans pending the body politic -- with representation from the Angleicals -- decide int he near future if it was a cool thing or not!

So, dear WOMEN, John Lennon a song for you. Woman is the N----r of the world. You are being put down because of your gender.

Is relgion racist, bigoted, prejudiced, generder slanted and sexually oriented slanted.

Yepoo!

What will the reaction to a Black Pope be!

Is it coming!

Will women ever become Priests in the Catholic Church!

Will all ranks of Bishops open up to Women!

Will Gays get married in Churches other than the Angelican ones of the Cananda!?

Who are also on suspension!

Yes. How Christian is your Christian church!

Everyone's assignment is to ask the Minister for the date in which the FIRST BLACK PERSON was allowed to sit with the white folk!

Get a firm date. It's gotta be a milestone!

You get 5 points for each decade going back. Does your church rate a 50, a 40, a 10 or a 100!

Your church was fully INTEGRATED by 1906, I want the name of that church at they are pretty liberal and very christian hearted.

Remember in 1962 it took an act of congress, a battalion NAtional Guard troops to put one black boy into a University in Georgia and a Unanimous Supreme Court Ruling to integrate the schools!

I was there. I know. I saw it all happen!

(The Bible says "Like Should Be With Like" therefore it sets the pattern for the people to follow with Free Will!)

I've gotten racist comments thrown at me on this board.

But never by "religious people."

It's always been either a) an atheist, or b) a gay person who doesn't like the fact that I like gay people but disapprove of homosexuality.

Certain members of the latter group, in fact, have been particular hostile -- and have not been above using vitriol based on my ethnicity.

"You stupid black b---h" is just the tip of that particular iceberg.

So ... who are the real racists here?

Religion should preach tolerance and acceptance of people different to you, whether they be a different gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or creed. So religion is not racist.

Christianity is not racist. God loves all despite origin, race, creed, religion, and we are taught to follow in His footsteps.
