THIS IS HOW I DO IT!!!!!
Wash and scrub yams and place in pot to boil. Yams may be cut in half to cook faster. Cover with water and bring to boil. Cook until yams are tender enough to be pierced with a fork. Drain water, cool yams slightly, and remove them to a cutting board.
Peel skin from cooked yams, then slice into chunks. (*If using canned yams, start here.) Place yams into an oven safe casserole dish. Sprinkle brown sugar and butter over the top. Then cover yams with a layer of marshmallows.
Bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes or until marshmallows have puffed up and browned. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Many different ways.

I like to clean and oil the skins, wrap them in foil, and toss them in the barbecue for a half hour. Or leave out the foils and toss in some wood chips. Or cut them up as fries, add some oil and garlic salt, and put THAT in foil and in the barbecue for a half hour or so.

They work great in the oven too, and I'm sure they can be boiled as well. Cooked in the over, add a bit of butter and some brown sugar.

Or, you could go REALLY old fashined and just put the whole dang yam in a fire (that's right, IN a fire, not over or near, in the fire) and then bust off the burned crust and enjoy a good old fashioned fire-cooked yam. Very tasty.

Like everyone else said. Boil them or bake them. A potato is pretty much a potato.

And to Micheal G - A sweet potato and a yam are not the same. Yams are not sweet.

wash the yam and cut out any blemishes. If the yam is large, cut it in half. Then cut the yam in wedges.

Warm oven to 350 and spray the baking pan with an oil.

In a shallow dish, put in olive oil. then add spices; I use sea salt, grounded pepper, then any other herb that with in easy reach...I don't like to work hard with cooking. 4 herbs is what I use. Mix well.

Take each wedge and coat it with the olive oil mixture. Place in baking pan and bake for 20 - 30 min depending on size of wedge. Yum yum yum

peel whole yams then cut into cubes place in a pot filled with water add butter, nutmeg ,brown sugar and cinnamon let them boil then turn down your flame and let simmer with the top on make sure the water does evaporate. Simmer until yams is soft and mushy all the way through.

I THINK THE BEST WAY IS TO BAKE THEM IN THE SKIN, JUST LIKE A BAKED POTATO.THEN PEEL AND CUT THEM OPEN AND ADD BUTTER, BROWN SUGAR, OR WHAT EVER YOU AD TO THEM.SUIT YOURSELF.
i think the best yams i ever had were sprinkled with the little red hot candies. gives them a sweet, cinnamon taste.

You can boil them & mash with a little bit of cinnamon sugar and butter. Or bake them and top with butter and brown sugar or cinnamon sugar. You can also boil them sliced into circles place in a baking dish, sprinkle brown sugar, top with marshmellows and bake @ 350 for 45 min. (Now do you see why we call em Sweet Potatoes?lol)
