That is a way of cleaning themselfs. Thats why cats hate the water. They only wasy they take showers is to lick themselves. It is also a way of getting rid of shedded fur.

grooming, nervousness, anxiety. it depends on how often they lick themselves.

if you're meaning why do cats lick themselves in "private places," well, those have to be clean too. it's not like they use our toilet paper and wipe after each time they go to the bathroom.... it's gross, but so is stuff hanging off of you.

i had a cat for 16 years and he just died two days ago. the reason why they do that is because its a way to groom/ clean themselves. since u really cat give them a bath b/c they are jumpy thats their way of cleaning themselves.
