I'm guessing from what you say that "if he wants out..." that he hasn't yet dumped you.
The thing is there...he doesn't want out. If he did - he'd have done it and added in "oh and by the way..." to tell you that.
Maybe you do or don't - I don't know - but make sure you take good care of yourself - and guys do notice breath. That said, I'm sure girls do too - so I take good care of it.
Maybe if you have a job in a smelly place you could have a shower after work? It could help (I work as a pilot - and generally refuel my own planes. I know for a fact my girlfriend doesn't appreciate it if I have a fuel spill and come home smelling like Jet-A1 or AvGas!)
I think...insulting as it seems - it's best to just calm down and maybe try a bit harder...you mightn't realise yourself and it might be just one thing that he doesn't like. Perhaps...ask him to elaborate.
Again...no offense intended...and good luck! :-)

A guy broke up with you because you smelled bad?
I think he did you a favor by telling you that you smell bad. Now you can fix the problem.
However, yeah... If it was just meant as an insult, then he didn't have to say anything.
The guy may have legitimately broke up with you because you smell bad. That isn't an insult, it is a fact. But, if he really wanted to stay with you, he would have mentioned the issue or subtely helped solve the problem. "Do you like this perfume? Man! I really like the smell of Secret on a woman!"

My son's friend is a girl who really does smell bad, but they don't want to hurt her feelings by saying something to her, but eveyone in her whole school comments on her bad BO. I don't know why she has it, I assume she showers and uses deodorant, but if it were me I would want someone to tell me that I had a problem like that.

Guys are honest creatures. Stop overthinking it. Try asking a question like, "Why do you say that? Is it my perfume? Bodywash?" I know I have run across women who insisted on wearing the WORST perfumes and then would bathe in them.
Stop overthinking it. Just take it for EXACTLY what it is, word for word. If you don't like him, dump him, swiftly, with no reason.

maybe he doesnt want out, maybe you just smell. he may want to be with you but its hurting him you wont shower?
he may be trying as hard as he can not to insult you, cause he really loves you, but dayum, you smell.
so hop in the shower. and then go see him, see if he's happy to see ya. if hes not, then he wanted out. if he's happy, then you just stank and needed a bath.

If he was saying it to hurt your feelings, that was wrong. If however you do have....questionable hygiene then wouldnt you rather someone told you about it? Either way you're probably better off without him!
