I'm sure you could get Israel to stop its military action, but how do you get Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran to stop their military action. Your question assumes that you are dealing with logical and responsible parties. Any cease fire now is time that Hezbollah will use to stock up on more rockets. Remember the UN resolution that called for Israel and all foriegn militias to get out of Lebanon. Well Israel got out and Hezbollah moved in 13,000 rockets. Iran called for the destruction of Israel just a few weeks ago. Now they have put their plan in motion. Iran and Syria are going to keep going with this proxy war no matter what outside parties do. Cease Fires, civilian deaths, UN resolutions, protests, its all good for Iran. They are fixed on their goal.

Easy. Because Hezbollah defines victory by simply killing a few Israelis and not being utterly destroyed. If there is a cease-fire, Hezbollah survives and wins because Israel cannot finish the job. The US and Israel are the only countries to figure this out, and in a war you can't define victory only by achieving your objectives, but also by preventing the enemy from achieving his.

What the US wants in this case is not that important.

Israel is waiting for Hezbollah to run out of military supplies (rockets, RPG's) and to keep up enough pressure to prevent Iran from resupplying them.

Look for a cease fire when the IDF feels they have that achieved. When the number of rocket attacks by Hezbollah reduces to almost nothing, instead of the current dozens to hundreds per day.

Alternately, when the number of Hezbollah dead is closer to 1000, since they know they are not getting their original two soldiers back.

Israel will want to send a dramatic number for revenge 500:1 might do it.

I assume Israel doesn't because they are surrounded by countries which have pubically called for the destruction of Israel, including leaders of Hezbollah.... the USA isn't in a position to call for a ceasefire because of Bush's stance on "the war against terror". Kinda hard to wage war through the Middle East saying you must destroy all terrorists and then turn around tell Israel they aren't allowed to do the same, no?

Because a cease-fire will not resolve the problems that caused the fighting.

Israel's terms for a cease fire make sense and will result in greater stability in the region.

Because the cease-fire will only last as long as it takes for Hezbollah and Lebanon to catch their breath and rearm, same as it did last time.

Simple; a cease fire is a military victory for hezzbolah; and they get to re arm, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and make it harder for Israel next time. No good comes of a cease fire for Israel.

For the Americans it diverts world attention from the horrible mess they have made in Afghanistan and Iraq.
For the Israelis they don't care about killing gentiles, they are god's chosen people.
Never forget the religious element in this.
