Laws reqire embalming if the body is kept for more than a day or so.... so that people are not contaminated who would come to the funeral.... Funeral rituals are distinctively different for each denomination and area of the country... They are usually just traditions that each group has developed over years.... Grandma did it this way.... Grandpa would have like it that way..... Embalming goes back to the days of Egyptians...who perfected it.... We practice is fore health reasons more than anything.

I think the embalming is to keep the stench down for the 'viewing of the body' ewww! That is a good question though. Also why do they put them in caskets that don't deteriorate (or very slowly) just to clutter up the earth? I want to be creamated. I feel bad enough for 'cluttering' up the earth with my living body! lol

For closure and to pay respect to the person who died. They embalm them to preserve their bodies, even though they become corrupted (decayed), it is a service that is provided to respect the creations of God. It is also believed that the body will one day be resurrected with the spirit, during the second coming. So we prepare the body as if it were to happen.

Mainly to prevent disease. For the survivors to get together and deal with their loss. Also, so their loved ones are not dug up and eaten by dogs. And finally, so the funeral home owners can make the big bucks.

So the rotting body doesn't smell up the funeral home. Plus puke is hard to get out of expensive furniture.
