They can put you partially under so you don't ever remember the surgery part. Just suck it up and get it over with. That's what I had to do. This is coming from someone who TOLD the dentist she would throw up if he kept up with that, he told me I wouldn't and I did. Don't worry about the gag reflex.

I had an extreme fear of the dentist and finally had to go because I needed a root canal (severe pain there, couldn't take it anymore). Anyway, in addition I needed my wisdom teeth out - which I put off for three years. Last month the dentist told me i have a cavity in my wisdom tooth but he refused to do anything with it because they needed to come out.
Well - I had them out this morning. I was so terrified, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I'm afraid of needles but even the IV wasn't bad. I was out in about a minute, next thing I knew - they were waking me up. No pain during and no pain now. I feel a little sick from the ansthesia and pain meds, but I feel fine when I lay down. Do it - you'll be okay. I can tell you - the pain of this is much less than the pain the wisdom teeth cause you before you have them out.

“Dentistry has evolved greatly over the years,” says Bahcall. “The changes are revolutionary with new technological innovations, better training of dental professionals and higher licensing standards. Today’s dentist is not your grandparents’ dentist.”

Dr. Bahcall, 43, understands first hand how people view dentists. Upon his acceptance to a post graduate endodontic residency program, his own mother asked him why he wanted to go into a field that hurts people. Dr. Bahcall, DMD, MS, is an assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Surgical Sciences at Marquette University, School of Dentistry. He is also the director of the postgraduate Endodontic Residency Program at Marquette. Dr. Bahcall is a Board Certified Endodontist.

Check with your dentist - many offer twilight or complete sedation to calm you and make your procedure painless and stress free.

I also was a dental-phobic but began participating in dental studies through local research companies and am now much more at ease when I go to a dentist.
