How to Care for Your Retainer
Retainers live in your mouth along with bacteria, plaque, and leftover food particles. You'll want to clean your retainer every day by taking it out and brushing it with your toothbrush and toothpaste. You can also soak it in mouthwash or a denture-cleaning agent to freshen it up and kill germs.
Because the plastic of your retainer can crack if it gets too dry, you should always soak it when it isn't in your mouth. Plastic can warp easily, so don't put it in hot water or leave it near a heat source - like on your radiator, for example. Finally, do not bend the wires. Flipping the retainer around in your mouth will cause the wires to bend.
One important way to take care of your retainer is not to lose it! They are expensive and your mom or dad might have to pay for lost or damaged retainers. Worse yet, they might ask you to help pay for a new one! So look before you dump your lunch tray and try to keep it in the same spot at home when you're not wearing it. In other words, retain your retainer!

The first question I have for you, is the retainer with a wire and plate (called Hawley) or clear plastic trays like bleaching trays? As one person who answered to your question, if they are not in your mouth, they should me in the retainer case. You can clean them couple of times a week with regular tooth paste and/or by dipping them in a small bowl of Listerine. Never leave them on your dashboard and do not let let your pet get to you. The best way to take care of retainer is by soaking them warm water with a retainer cleaning tablet. The tablets are called retainer brite (retainerbrite.com). If you buy one year supply of these tablets, they give you a small ultrasonic cleaner. (Please note that I do not have any financial interest in retainer brite, this for your info)

Do yourself a favor...ask your orthodontist if he does permanent retainers... it sounds weird but there is no taking them out to eat lunch at school and accidentally throwing it away.. or embarrassing metal wire across your teeth... No one see's the permanent and it keeps your teeth perfect!! Plus there usually less expensive then the regular retainers!!! so your parents might like that too!!!

Always, always, ALWAYS carry a retainer case with you when you are wearing them. The biggest problem I had was losing them. I'd go to eat and wrap em up in a napkin or something and forget them.
So I guess my answer really is:
Rule 1: If they are not in your mouth, put them in the case.
Rule 2: Don't leave the case in the sun, or in a carin the sun.
