Its an incentive to the U.S. soldiers. Instead of a pay raise we get a tax break. British soldiers make much more than U.S. soldiers.

All Armed Forces members don't stop paying taxes during a time of war, only the ones that are actually in a war zone don't have to pay them. But even that isn't only during a war. They get tax-free anytime they are in dangerous zone. For instance, when my husband when on his six month deployment with the Navy in 1998, they weren't tax-free the entire deployment, but when they entered of of the cost of a country considered high risk, they received tax-free. And it's the same for him now. We are stationed In Italy, and though he is no longer on a ship, the Command he is with does require him to travel, and it's usually to places like Bahrain and Dubai, so he receives tax-free for that month. I don't know about other foreign countries where we have bases, but here we get our housing allowance tax-free every month.

Where did you hear the u.s. soldiers don't pay taxes? that only applies to when you are in imminent danger. i.e. combat zone. You can take off part of your pay when filing taxes. I'd really like to see a link please.

Sounds to me like this is a question that you should be asking your MP.

(And I am surprised and disappointed that your country does this to you.)
