I own a saint bernard and i just adore him. He is 7 months old and was very neglected before i got him. He was at the vet for 13 days for parvo the same day he was rescued he was admitted into the vets office.

I would not trade this dog for anything in the world, he is great with my kids and loves anybody that comes in the door. Very obediant and ver smart. He really does not eat that much at one time, but i feed him 3-4 times per day as saint bernards are very prone to bloat which kills them within hours, but most large breeds are prone to this and as long as they are fed at least two times per day the chance for this to happen is less.

I keep mine in the house and he was completely potty trained within a few days of bringing him in. He sleeps most the time and not real active until he goes outside. A puppy needs lots of chew toys as they love to chew.
Gets along with all my animals and can care less if it is a cat or a horse.
Someone stated that they are inner bred, and will turn on their masters, No maybe some if not treated right will turn on their masters just like any other dog, but all the saint bernard really enjoys is love and attention.
If you think about it there is no dog that is a purebred really in reality. They all have been bred with a differant breed to become the dog they are.
The saint bernard was crossed with the new foundland in order to get the long haired version of the breed. The lifespan of the saint bernard is 12-14 years but can live to be 15 plus with the proper care.
The saint bernard really likes to lay around and sleep as they are very lazy dogs. They are calm, easy going and very patient dogs. the possibility of them being mean is a possibility as any dog can be, but because of the movie cujo people has seemed to get the wrong idea of the saint bernard, but they are very loyal and harmless if treated right. Mine does not shed that much either but if you keep them brushed that cuts down on the shedding. Mine is 7 months old and he does not drool yet, so i have not experienced that yet, but i will love him all the same.

I hope you like drool and hair.... alot :D

They're great dogs with kids, but if the kids are under 5, I'd either wait or choose a different breed. They can be a bit of a clumsy ox and step on or just bowl over small children.

They are also very big.... so keep in mind you may have a 135 pound, living, breathing, demanding creature on your hands. Yes they're adorable as puppies, and I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I'm just saying, consider what it will be like living with an adult Saint Bernard before getting sucked in by those oh-so-cute, cuddly puppies.

And remember that a giant breed will require twice the dose of heartworm preventative, almost twice the food and create twice the amount of hair as your average full sized (60-80lbs) dog.

Talk to a breeder and see them for yourself to get a good idea of what you'll be getting into.... you can't exactly convey the reality of such an amazing creature with merely the written word.

Good luck!

We had one when I was a child. To this day he's my favorite. He was a great watch dog to have for the home and us kids. Because of his size no one would have ever bothered us, but if they only knew him. He was the sweetest dog. He used to pull us on a sled when it snowed (we're in Texas so that means twice lol). The only problem we had with him was he was a large, outside dog, and hated to stay in the yard. He wasnt nuetered and he had a girlfriend on every street. It seemed like he'd get out every day and be back on the front porch waiting when we got home. He would also knock his water and food bowls over, but my dad made new ones out of concrete and he couldnt tip those over. We eventually chained him up (which we didnt like) and we'd let him off to play and took him out to the country almost every weekend. I dont seem to remember a lot of slobber but he wasnt inside very often and kids dont usually mind. Our next dog will be another Saint Bernard hopefully.

I understand that St Bernard dogs are excellent with adults and children. Make sure you buy it from a reputable dealer, take the children with you when you visit so you can monitor the dogs reaction to them. Any good breeder will give you all the information that you want to know.

YES!! I have a St Bernard mix. She is incredibly patient with my kids (3 & 1 1/2) I was very suprised at this. She is a very good dog, she is gentle with the cats and the kids. She is also only about six months old. The only problem we have with her is that if we o not give her enough attention she gets destructive (chewing on the furniture). Good luck!

Saint Bernard's are inter bred, & they say they are one of the top leading dogs that can turn on a master without warning! It,s because of the inter breding that makes them go crazy, plus they dont live very long 8-10 years and im streching it when i say that! if you want a saint bernard.... i would say get a mix with something eles along with the saint bernard,Ive seen first hand how much damage they can do to kids,my dad is a doctor and it took him 12 hours to reconstruct alittle girl ear that her saint bernard shreaded!so be careful!

The BEST.
I got one less than 2 years ago and he was such a sweetheart I got him his brother from the same breeders (same mom and dad) just because I felt like he deserved that companionship (even thogh I work at home!).
They are mellow when they're hanging out and energetic when you take them out for fun. They are very intelligent - learning tricks well. They are patient with little ones (better as adults than as puppies). So loyal - so huggable. The best breed ever.
Just take your time when it is a puppy to teach it how you want it to behave in your home. Puppies can be crazy and aggressive and needy. Get the book by the New Skeet Monks (?) called The Art of Raising a Puppy. Read it before getting the puppy. It tells you how to curb behaviors you don't want right away. Also take it to a puppy kindergarted around 3 months old. You will have yourself the best dog in the world. They really want to please you - and if you know what you want from them from the start they won't be confused as to how to please you.
good luck!
Oh - we live in Lake Tahoe - so it is a good climate for them. I think the only drawback would be if you lived somewhere that gets super super hot. If so, plan to be able to keep them inside in the AC or they will get heatstroke, etc.

My Saint Bernard's like their rope toys. They have one I bought at Petco, that has a huge ball in the middle, and then ropes hanging on either side. They also have a large ball that is all knotted and is made out of the same rope materiel. They also have a Kong football, and frisbee, that they have not torn up yet!! For stuffed toys, I go to the Thrift stores around town and buy stuffed toys (clean, nice ones.) which last a while around my house, until they get tired of them, and then they destroy them! I get the ones free of glass or plastic eyes & nose's. Good Luck, I hope I helped!!

sure they are if u have the time to train them. they drool alot too. they are big dogs so dont let ur kids pester him too much. they probably wont attack but dont push the luck. they need lots of room outside and if allowed inside make sure to have quite a bit of room. they might live a couple more years if u mix another big breed into it like a great pyrneese or known as a Pyrenean Mountain Dog.
