To be the best combat fighter you must have a good ground game, a knowledge of stand-up, a repertoire of submissions and a knowledge of how to combat submissions. This is the practice part. The other part is the practical of just plain fighting. You must have fight experience either through matches or practices. Take on every body type and style. This is the only way to become better as a fighter.

First off I think the question should be "How can I be an Excellent combat fighter?" No single fighter can honestly claim to be the best because they haven't fought the entire world population of fighters. That being said, passion and dedication to training in a "live" format (as opposed to static mechanical drills
) with opponents from differnet disciplines and with varying body types will certainly sharpen your skills. With years of training and dedicated study you will become the BEST "fighter" YOU can be. In my humble opinion that is all we can aspire to be.

Once more "fighters" accept the idea that the truly great are actually "Warriors" and that they live for Honor above all other things, the sport will benefit greatly. See the sport is, aside from entertaining, simply another form of training. It provides us an opportunity to test our skill, and learn from our pain. Those who are Honorable compete for that reason alone.

The following is the qualities one must have to be Honorable:

H umilty
O f the soul
N eutraltity
O f the mind
R everence for your brethren

If you can find these qualities within yourself, you will see clearly the path to becoming a Warrior and the desire to be the "BEST" will vanish. You will find it replaced with the many other simple pleasures that we most often overlook.

how can you be the best physical combat fighter? don't waste your time with tricking or aerial kicks. don't practice standing on one leg for hours, because a good fighter will make contact with his target, and put it back on the ground in less than one second. use good body mechanics. do lots of physical conditioning, so a solid punch won't snap your neck. well, that's all the common sense part of it, assuming you didn't know it.

If you're old enough to ask, it's most likely too late. Many great fighter train since they're as young as 10 to 13.

However Onomatoperia is pretty much correct. Also cross train a lot.

best physical combative fighter.. well, there's 6 elements to being a great combative fighter..

1. hands - boxing
2. feet - kicking
3. ground - grappling
4. defense - protection and evasion
5. gas - stamina and conditioning
6. experience - sparring

to compete as a combative fighter, particularly in mixed martial arts you need all 6 elements to be good.. its pretty much almost impossible to excell at all 6.. unless you train 24/7.. but if you get sufficient in each and have good skill you can become a great combative fighter..

1a. hands - western style boxing is one of the most effective forms of 'hand to hand' combat. if you can throw a right hook to the face with near perfect form you can knock someone out almost everytime.. there are a lot of fighter nowadays who train for that big punch.. that's all well and good but what if the guys got an iron chin, you're not going to find that sweet spot easily.. train for speed and accuracy when it comes to your hands.. make sure you have at least 5 punch combinations, use that jab(people underestimate the efficency of the jab) it's a great opener, whether you're openning him up to for an onset of flurrying hand strikes or using it to set up a low line roundhouse kick, the jab is your secret weapon.. and do this, when you're training boxing, train both directions, if you're right handed learn south paw, it will come in handy...
1b. hands - martial arts strikes. do not underestimate the power of your elbows, forearms, hammerfist, and palm strikes. many a faces have been cut open by elbows and many a noses have been broken by a hammerfist.. learn to slap box.. there's nothing more annoying than to have your eardrum slapped full of air, it effects your equal librium and balance at least temporary, so that gives you a slight advantage over your competition.. learn how to throw elbows, hammerfist and palm heels from your back (for mma)
easy drill- lay flat get your heavy bag and put it in your guard.
push up as if it was an opponent in your guard and
release, replacing your hands w/your elbow, this will
give you that close quarters short range power in
your elbows for striking from your back..

2. feet - kicking. like the gentlemen above said, don't worry about inside/outside cresant kicks, spinning jump kicks, etc.. they have worked on occassion but you're gambling on 'em. to train smart in kicking, focus on muay thai style roundhouse kicks to the legs and ribs, condition your legs to be able to meet shin to shin because if you don't and you actually meet an opponents shin, it can stop you dead in your fighting tracks.. knees to the body and face can be a great weapon. a lot of people don't train for knees to the outer thighs, but do that and you'll be able to incapacitate your opponents legs a lot faster if doing those knees from the clinch.. foot stomps are not really 'in style' anymore, but they are a great way to get your opponents mind going elsewhere, and after about 4-5 they really start to hurt.. the knee check is another great move that not many people focus on, checking the knee can cause it to collapse giving you a moment to gain control..

3. ground - grappling. mma nowadays is fought mostly from the ground, so grappling and submissions have become a key factor.. learn the basics.. if you master the basics and a few submissions move, instead of learning a little of everything and being just ok at everything it's not going to get you far. work on your guard, grip, and a few submissions from the guard, like front choke, arm bars, and roll overs.. from your mounted position concentrate on passing, ground and pound, and submissions. if you have no training partner there are great drills you can do on the heavy bag, mark hatmaker has a great video that has grappling drills with heavy bags.. bas rutten also has great submission videos available for about $9.99 thru century martial arts. they're great references, like i said get really great at 3 or 5 moves and work them until you can do them with your eyes closed..

quality not quantitiy is the key!

4. defense - just like in football or basketball, if you don't have a great defense your offense means ditly.. get good at defense, boxers defense- parrying, bobbing/weaving drills; kickers defense- knee blocks, shin blocks, and evasion; and ground defense, take a cue from the ice man, if they can't get you down they can't submit you..... make sure you know how to move your body and your HEAD away from danger.. good defense can mean the difference between a 15 minute fight and a 15 second fight..

5. gas - if you don't have it, you ain't going to last long.. if you can't jump rope for 15 minutes straight there's no way you're going to be able to fight for 15 minutes, no matter what you think.. i know guys who say it ain't going to take 15 min.. of course not, you're gonna gas and he's going to mount you and submit you in 5.. concentrate on maintaining your stamina and conditioning.. jog, jump rope, if your knees are bad swim laps, just make sure that you can last a fight.. because there's nothing easier than taking out a guy who's run out of gas..

6. experience - sparring. nothing pisses me off more than a guy throwing beautiful punches and kicks to the pads, and when he gets in the ring/cage he starts throwing these rediculous looping hay makers and all that technique he was nicely displaying goes out the window.. really really pisses me off.. sparring is the best way to make sure you won't look like a total fool in the ring.. it will give you experience as to what works and what doesn't and it will give you the confidence to step into that ring and not let fear or adreneline get the better of you.. truely.. and spar everyone.. not just guys in your weight class.. take on taller guys, heavier guys, shorter guys, that way no matter what opponent you're up against you've got an idea of the distance and power you can expect from them..

well, i know that was pretty long winded, but this is something i'm really adament about.. combative and mixed martial arts is a big part of my life and i hate to see it disrespected by people who go in there half assed just to make a few bucks and they actually get luck and score a win..

respect your art, respect your ability, respect your opponents and you will come out on top..

good luck!!!
