Usually they are back to normal after the anesthesia has worn off. They will be groggy for about 24 hours. Hopefully the vet will give him pain medicine before and at least 2-3 days after the surgery. Physical activity should be limited until the stitches or staples come out, or about 10 days. Jumping and rough-housing can inhibit healing and licking the incision is especially detrimental to healing.

Since he's male it won't take long at all. He will probably be groggy for a while when you pick him up, unless he stays overnight at the vets' and the anesthesia has had time to wear off. You'll want to keep him calm and from jumping around for a week or two, but after the first day or two, he'll be back to his old self. You can bathe him when the stitches come out-usually about 7-10 days after surgery. But check with your vet first just in case. As with all surgery in which an animal will be put under anestetic, there is a small risk of death or complications. However, with neutering being such a widely practiced and simple operation, the chances of such a thing are very very slim. The benefits to neutering your dog highly outweight the risks. So take your dog in to be neutered, and make sure you stay calm! I also provided a few links for you with some info down below.

It take usually about a week. As long as he has not got a hold of the stitches. The elizabethan collar works wonders for this.

It should not take an extremely long time... I volunteered at a veternarian's office and she did the procedure everday. Your dog just has to get over the soreness and his testosterone levels, of course, will drop so he will be a little frightened at the little things, but your doggy will be fine! ;)

Mine have all been back to normal by the next day, although sometimes the sack will be swollen for a while afterward. Keep him quiet, though, so that he doesn't damage the incision.

By 2-3 days after the procedure they should be back to normal, if they're not their stitches may be uncomfortable, and they may need removing.

I don't know about neutering, but mine seemed fine as soon as he had it done. I know when baby got spayed, they said seven days before she can play with big brother.
