Migrating Cranes fly over the Himalayas at altitudes of 32,800 feet (10,000 meters).

Most flying animals seldom fly over 500 feet above the land they live on. Example, an American Bald Eagle flying over the Rocky Mountains would fly over the mountains and maybe a few hundred feet- seldom exceeding 500 feet- above the mountains. Why not higher? Cause they need to see the food their going to get off the ground.

Now, how high can a person fly NORMALLY without oxygen? Roughly 10,000 feet- if an airplane flys above 10000 feet they must have an oxygen mask or a pressurized cabin. Airs too thin to support life very well above this level

Don't know, but I was wondering at the weekend how my garden pigeon would react if it was taken up in an airplane to the highest breathable layer of atmosphere and then pushed out. Would it choose to nose-dive back to ground as quickly as possible (for the food on my bird table) or be lost & confused up there !

This is only my own personal hypothesis, but I know they have been known to fly over Everest, so I would imagine that there is no set limit to how high they can fly, as long as there is enough air to breathe.

Some geese get so high they kind of freeze. Highest I know was 37,000 ft for a ruppells vulture.
