obviously, we all have different opinions. that is clear, but when it comes to religion, everyone wants to be correct, not opinionated. if you are not correct or "right" then you go to "hell." so it doesn't matter what your religious beliefs are, there is always the fear of eternal damnation for those beliefs. the truth scares people as much, if not more, than the falsehoods passed down through generations of tradition. putting the "fear" of God in people is the only way organized religion has lasted as long as it has.

For Christians yes, it's hard to think that someone could doubt it why because they have had an experience to give them the faith to believe. They get so entrenched in what EVEN this country is founded on and that is GOD. IN GOD WE TRUST! It's on our money, in our pledge of allegiance and in our Constitution. It is horrifying to think that there are people out there who even at this moment scheme to find ways of removing GOD from everything they can. Yet we see it happening on a daily basis.
As far as practicing Christianity yes that is equally horrifying. WHY? Because of all the interpretations of it. Men have managed to mangle just about every good thing there is if we could just get back to the basics and what Christianity really is then maybe it wouldn't be that way. But in all honesty you are taking a quote and asking for views but we don't know in what context this quote was meant to be used. Just like in the Bible all things are open to interpretation and so it is also with this quote it's hard to understand what exactly the author meant by this statement unless you read it as a whole. There have been many wars in the name of Christianity that can be a hard thing to witness and even more difficult to understand when one of God's key commandments is to Love your Neighbor. I don't know if any of this makes sense but I can kinda of see what he's aiming at, then again who knows I could be totally off on this.

I can see where Mr Butler is coming from, but I believe he is refering to the most extremes on either side.

Or possibly he is refering to only fanatical Christians. They are usually the ones who can't stand to see people not conforming to their ways, and they are usually the ones people are looking at when they are "horrified" at what they practice.

It is just a matter of all things in moderation.

I'm not horrified at seeing it doubted or practiced, I think it is a generalization. The religion is doubted all the time by believers and unbelievers alike. And I don't know many people that are horrified at it being practiced (horrified at it being miss-practiced yes, but not horrified at it being practiced correctly).

I think he was right for his environment. Just look at England, or all of Northern Europe, what kind of predicament are they in. There is hardly a church left open anywhere. All you can hear is the Islamic call to prayer. All the young people think Islam is just another good religion. Those people took a 'lukewarm attitude towards God 100 years ago, so God takes a lukewarm attitude towards then now. In one generation-all of Europe is gone. Its not coming back either. Its over for them.

No if you are a Christan you would be used to people doubting you. And see it as a chance to correct the person. If you see the practice of Christianity then you are a christian.

I think that this quote reffers to the age old badle between good -vs- evil. People want to be good, and do good, but good is for some reason "not Cool" so that is why people have an attitude toward people who make a consiouse effort to follow their Christian beliefs. This is explains why in society it is only acceptable to be "just good enough". If your too good, or too disaplined then people fear that u are trying to be better than them, and they view u as being, "higher than thou", so to answer ur question society has drawn this line between an acceptable Christian vs- an unexceptable one. In a sense we fear what we Know we do not do, and we envy those who do it!

This is true because i think those who truly believe in Christianity are astonished and scared that others can't or won't see it their way and for those seeing it practiced and it being smothered on them are horrified at these people because they are being told that what they do is evil and that they'll go to hell if they don't accept Christ into their lives.

Sure...50 % are NOT doubters of God's Word and 50% are doubters,

and both are equally horrified at the other group.

I would agree.

In general, no one wants their faith challenged. There is a feeling that you are backing the right horse in the selection of your faith.

But what is done in the name of Christianity is equally horrifying.
