I don't really get the question. He hoped that by sending troops to Vietnam, that he could assist Southeast Asia from becoming a "communist-block" (see the domino-theory) . He believed by sending money and equipment and eventually troops to the region that he could help South Vietnam to become a democratic and free nation and avoid allowing the Communists to completely influence or dominate that part of the world.

And frankly, we all felt our troops and military technology could do the job against those we believed to not be much more than peasant farmers and inferior military.

Johnson hoped to draw the VC into a pitched battle between conventional forces. Instead, the VC engaged in asymmetrical warfare...that is ..guerilla tactics against a conventional army. Too bad for us.
