get a small container and mix baking soda with water until it has the same consistency as tooth paste, apply it to your tooth brush and start brushing. Continue to brush for at least two minutes and stop. Pure Baking soda applied to your teeth is a harsh chemical, so be care full not to reap any side affects. Try not to swallow it and rinse very well. It's like bleach and it could start eating at your gums if you use it too long. So it is safe to use in moderation, not all the time for long periods of time. Note, if your gums start to bleed, rinse and stop brushing, you may need to stop brushing for about a day or two, because your gums will be like an open sore.

Here are two different suggestions from eHow.com -- I do the first, myself. Check the link for more ways to get a brighter smile!

Works the best eHow Friend
Brush with your normal toothpaste first. Rinse the toothbrush then dip it in baking soda & brush with that for 1 minute (you may have to reapply the baking soda once more - it dissolves fast). Rinse with mouthwash. Do this twice a day until desired white.

Before brushing, rinse the mouth with either mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide (do not swallow) for about 45 seconds. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush. Sprinkle some baking soda onto the toothpaste. Brush for about 3 minutes. Rinse with peroxide for about 30 seconds. Rinse again with water. You will notice a significant change in about 2 weeks.

This does work but baking soda is VERY abrasive and will not only make your teeth super sensitve but will break down the enamel. You are better off either buying one of the whitening tooth pastes or paying the extra $$ to have whitening done professionally in the dental office.

Put it on your toothbrush, make sure that the brush it wet first so that it will adhere. You can also purchase paste with baking soda in it. Most brands have it as an ingredient anyway

stick your toothbrush in water and then into the baking soda.. this will allow it to connect to the brush in a pasty manner... then brush as normal, reapplying as needed.. prepare for a harsh taste.

As a whitener? Don't bother. Messy and gross. Fork out the extra $$ and get the molds made of your teeth and the real whitening solution. Works in a week with long lasting results.

I think you make a paste with a small amount of water and brush. Arm & Hamer now has a toothpaste also.

Yes, you put a small amount on your toothbrush & brush your teeth with it. Don't add too much water.
