Here is the REAL scope:
There are two types of dialysis we have currently-
Hemo-which involves using the blood of the patient. This is VERY rough on the body, hurts the blood vessels and can lead to an increase in PVD(peripheral vasi. disease) and hardening of the arteries(although most patients on dialysis already have this due to Diabetes/Hypertension). Life expenctancy varies from 1yr to 25yrs+(I have seen several patients live this long) Also the cause of the failure has a very important factor in when determining life expectancy. In my opinion this should be a last resort unless you can't tolerate a transplant or peritoneal. Very dependent on how well the patient takes care of themselve. Also you can start doing Hemo at home if your insurance company will cover it and you can afford it.

Pertoneal dialysis- You do exchanges through your stomach basically to keep your blood clean. Patients don't usually have a flucations of weakness or energy due to the performing of the exchanges EVERYDAY and can even be done at night. Life expenctancy is the same as that of a Kidney transplant.

Transplant- Best option if the patient is viable. Patient is not free from doctor's or drugs which are Very poweful. Their side effects can range from things such as hair loss up to diabetes up to cancer up to death. So they are no joke. But they free you from machines and you can have a "normal" life to an extent. Transplant is too long to type in here, but if you give me a best answer(joking) seriously if you need to talk to someone email me on here and I will even give you my number.
So to answer your question the treatment(unless you keep getting massive amounts of fluid load and being a noncompliant patient) is not life threatening but the DISEASE that caused it I would say is the main worry.

My grandpa was on kidney dialysis for 6 years. He was diabetic and that's what made his kidneys fail. He exercised, and watched his fluid intake and diet. They found him a kidney and he lived for another 8 years. He said the worst thing was not being able to drink all the soda or tea you wanted, and dialysis was kind of annoying, but he told me he always slept or watched tv. He always had somebody drive him though, cuase he said sometimes you feel dizzy afterwards. I drove him sometimes too. He died when he was 73.

if it is a serious kidney problem then people could be dialysis until they have a transplant kidney, but with the dialysis you can live for many years

My Doctor Told Me the depressing news - "Your Kidneys Are FAILING!"

My worsening kidney disease symptoms included:
- Nausea and vomiting and constant stomach upset
- Passing only small amounts of urine and stopping and starting while urinating
- Swelling in my ankles and lower legs
- Puffiness around my eyes with brain fog and moodiness
- Chronic fatigue and shortness of breath when exerting myself
- Loss of appetite and not wanting to eat at all
- Increasingly higher blood pressure
- Bouts of anxiety and depression
- Muscle cramps which were worse in my legs

That a friend of mine sent me a link to a website (http://NatureHomeCure.com) that helped his Mother. She was just like me, and was suffering with failing kidneys and experienced the same worries and fears I was going through. All I could do was try it and see if it worked.

Here's where the story gets a little strange. Two months later, Instead of my kidneys sliding down the slippery slope of kidney failure and getting progressively worse, they started to get better.

My Doctor could not believe how much improved my kidney function output had increased and my GFR was UP and creatinine levels lower. My kidneys were starting to work again, and removing all the toxins in my body. I got my life back!

Now, I am using this 100% all natural protocol which restored my kidney function and did it naturally, without the use of unnatural man-made pharmaceutical drugs or dialysis. In less than two months my kidneys were on the mend. Now six months later, My kidney's are back to normal again.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

I work in a dialysis unit. You can live for years, if you follow drs orders to a T. This is however considered a terminal illness.

The answer is pretty indefinitely - but you CANNOT mess around taking liberties with your diet etc.
Kidney transplants are one answer, but future options may well include stem cell therapy whereby you regrow a new kidney.
