No, there is not. In actuality, the original text of the creation story uses the same hebrew word for the living creature, i.e. beast, or bird, as it does the soul in chapter 2 in reference to the "living soul."

The whole "animals don't have souls" things is based on the creation story. The english version seems to lend itself toward this idea, but it is just not so.

Scripture teaches that human beings have souls (Matthew 16:26; Ecclesiastes 12:7). These souls will live with God in heaven or hell and then on the last day will be reunited with the person's resurrected body. Nowhere does it indicate that the same is true for animals. Thus an afterlife in heaven or hell is something that human beings will experience. Scripture does not speak about a dog heaven or any other afterlife for animals. When they die, their existence comes to an end.

It is possible that there will be animals in the new heaven and the new earth (2 Peter 3:13), that is, in heaven. But if we do find animals in heaven, they will not be the resurrected animals that previously lived here on earth.

Animals are souls it is not something they possess. In the Bible’s creation account, we read: “God went on to say: ‘Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls and let flying creatures fly over the earth upon the face of the expanse of the heavens.’ And God went on to say: ‘Let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds, domestic animal and moving animal and wild beast of the earth according to its kind.’ And it came to be so.” (Genesis 1:20, 24) In this passage, fish, domestic animals, and wild beasts are all referred to by the same word—“souls.” Birds and other animals are called souls at Genesis 9:10; Leviticus 11:46; and Numbers 31:28.

Humans likewise are called living souls.“In Noah’s days . . . a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.” (1 Peter 3:20) Here the word “souls” clearly stands for people—Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. Exodus 16:16 mentions instructions given to the Israelites regarding the gathering of manna. They were told: “Pick up some of it . . . according to the number of the souls that each of you has in his tent.” So the amount of manna that was gathered was based upon the number of people in each family. Some other Biblical examples of the application of “soul” or “souls” to a person or to people are found at Genesis 46:18; Joshua 11:11; Acts 27:37; and Romans 13:1.

it is generally supposed that because in Genesis 1 or 2 God is described as having breathed the breath of god into Adam that it was the soul. As He is not described as having breathed the breath of god into anything else, it is supposed to signify that humans alone have them. This is quanitifed when it says in Genesis 1 "subdue the earth" - this is a inclination that man is superior to animals etc

Another explanation is that Humans have rational souls - i.e we are able to know right from wrong, have a concsience, reflect on things we've done, use reason etc etc

Animals do have souls - as they are alive! but they do not have rational souls - i.e they have no intellect. they rely on instinct and memeory but can not rationalise why things are right and wrong. Becasue of this an animal cannot be evil or good, so for this reason a Catholic would say that an animal cannot get to heaven. (sad i know).

hop this helps. i am a theology student and this is the answer my professor gave me. still who can actually prove it eh?

There is nothing thats specifially states that animals do not have souls. Just a common interpretation like most verses in the bible where someone has picked a meaning to suit their purpose.

There is no such verse. The word for soul is "nephesh", which means, nutshelled, "a breathing thing". The Bible never specifically mentions animals having, or not having, souls, but from the very word's definition, it is safe to assume animals have souls as well, since they breathe in a similiar way that we do (inhale oxygen, process it with organs, exhale carbon dioxide).

I can't find the exact verse but, I was reading in the New Testament maybe James, and it says that the beasts/animals will return Down into the ground while the Righteous man will be exalted into heaven....which means that animals just die and have no soul if they did then God would say that he would have to Judge them as He Judges us but he's not worried about them, which means they have no soul to worry about....But he does say that we are to take care of the Earth, I he is angered by those who don't.....

"It is true that at times the Bible uses the same terms to refer to the life force in both humans and animals (Genesis 7:22), and although it is true that those terms may be used to refer to the immortal soul of humans (Ecclesiastes 12:7; Matthew 10:28), they are never employed by Bible writers to refer to an immortal soul (spirit) in animals."

The following site elaborates on the differences of opinion regarding the definition of the soul & whether or not animals have one.

Animals like humans are living souls, we don't have immortal souls. The Bible says, God alone is immortal. Every living thing is a soul.

The word for soul in the Old Testament is Nepesh, which means living breathing thing; this is used for man and animals. The New Testament uses pneuma, for spirit(it means air, wind, breath) Psuche(psyche) is the soul. It is used exclusively for man, there is no specific reference as to animals having a soul.
