President Harry Truman said that if you want a friend in Washington, buy a dog.

I hope you don't ever adopt that view.

If you live near downtown or along the subway lines you can go hang out at any of the coffee or breakfast places that are adjacent to those stops.

Also, Teaism on R Street in Dupont Circle is a great place for breakfast on Saturday mornings. Plus you can walk around Dupont Circle or go further North closer to the zoo in Woodley Park. There are some really good ethic restaurants there and bookstores as well.

By the way, if you like to bicycle, you could join Potomac Peddlers. It's a really fun way to see the area and meet lots of people too. There is always a lot of socializing afterwards whether you are in the slow, medium or really fast riding group. I guess what I'm saying is identify what you like and then find the groups that exist to see if you want to join them. Then, you'll satisfy your passion for that endeavor and easily make friends along the way.

There are lots of classes at the Corcoran in the evenings as well if you have any artistic leanings. You can also do volunteer work at any of the many charities in the area. There is no shortage of things to do. Find something you enjoy and pursue it. Do it now before the horrible cold winter comes too. Ok, that's it.

There is nothing any different in Wash. DC than anywhere else, you make friends the same way you made them in the past. If you mean rubbing elbows with the politicos, then that's an entirely different subject all together.

Look in the Washington Post Weekend section that will come out tomorrow. Find something to do under the events section that interests you, go, and meet people that you have something in common with.

Good luck!

Do you have any interests? Is there anything you enjoy doing? Do those things and you meet people with similar interests.

Don't have interests:
Go out to happy hours with your co-workers.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
Go to church.
Volunteer with animal rescue.
