Is there a way to recycle old, worn-out VHS tapes?

Save them, when a leg falls off, your favorite chair ect. use the old tapes to level,,, u have saved the environment and your sitting place.

I think at the moment the local recycling centre will just chuck them on the landfill pile, but if they can recycle computer monitor tubes then they should be able to recycle old video tape too. I guess there's just not enough worth-while materials in them.

I wonder how long it takes to decompose the plastic and tape?

That's A Good Question I Have Never Really Thought about that i just binned 2 of mine the other day so they went to the land fill maybe i should have recycled

i dunno. are they hazardous?

when i did some house cleanup and moving, i used the tape to tie things with, to pack boxes, the tape is quite difficult to tear - i did not have to buy any string or sticky tape - did you see the film with Tom Hanks, how he built a raft this way?
