The french controlled it until right after WWII and then the world pushed France to let them be independent. So the french pulled out not having a leader in Vietnam and they began to fight... leading to the Vietnam war.

The French thought they did but the Viet Mien owned the interior and countryside.
WWll was over in late 1945 and the French lost at Den Bien Phu in 1954. Less than 9 years after the Japs left, the French lost.
