when it is meal time, make him sit in another room...dont even let him cross the line between rooms,,,,just shush him and point to where you want him to sit...it make take a few tries but he will get it....and dont worry about hurting his feelings...in a pack the leaders eat first and then allow the others to eat so you will actually be reinforcing your role as pack leader and will help in other areas too

This has worked for me and all my friends who had the same problem as you. I promise it will work if you are consistent with this discipline.

Dogs look at the family they live in like a pack, there is always an alpha leader (male or female) they learn the order by watching your people family. Puppies need to learn this order, always leave hard food in a bowel by the water 24/7 so they can eat whenever they want. This will insure they never become fat and will stay healthy.

When your puppy jumps on your leg or the table wanting food grab the puppy by the head to restrain it and gently bite it right where the top lip meets the nose. (APPLY FORCE UNTIL THEY SLIGHTLY WINE) then you know you have their attention, then release and say NO!

This just lets the puppy know you are displeased with their action and after 2 or 3 times they will stop. Litters of dogs are softly bit by the mother dog to show the puppy the same thing you are showing your puppy.

This is not in humane, like hitting them with rolled up paper or something else. I know this may sound a little gross but it will always work. While you bite this soft spot on the lip & nose they will look into your eyes and the combination of bite and eye contact is where they learn.

Major problem here, but easy to correct. You stated that your puppy is doing this when your kids are eating, am I to understand then that he doesn't do this to you or your spouse. IF not, then that is good. He sees you and your spouse as the leaders, but he things that your children are below him. That is what we have to change. First of all, do not feed him at the same time that you are eating. This is giving a false impression of being equal to the children. The best way is to allow the children to eat and for you to displine the dog while they are eating. No yelling, and do not push the dog down. Remember to remain calm. Yelling shows excitement, and pushing him down gives him the physical contact he is wanting. Get a pinch collar and put it on him. What would be the best is that while the children are eating, have him sit about 10 ft from the table. Make him lay down. If he makes a move, a sharp pop of the leash should do the trick. You do not want to jerk the leash as this can hurt him, just pop the leash. The pinch is only on there for him to use. If he tries to go towards the table the pinch will tighten. When he stops, bring him back over to the original place and make him lay down again. Continue this until the children are done eating. When they are done eating, have the oldest child or your spouse rake all the left over food (because we all know that kids can never eat it all) into his bowl and then mix it with his dry food. Make sure he is calm during all this and watching what is going on. Once the food is mixed up, set it down, but again, do not let him get it until he is calm. Once he is calm, lead him, do not let him just run over to, lead him to the food, and allow him to eat. May take a couple days, but once he gets the idea, he will realize that he is the omega.

this is so easy
NEVER ever feed him from the table again.
Problem solved,it is not the dogs fault that you trained them to jump and then they will get a snack

A rolled up newspaper does the trick!

Just pop him in mid-air! He'll get the message!

Susuze has your answer. You are the alpha not the dog. The only thing I would do different is crate him. Mine still try but I can tell them to lay down and they will leave me alone but they still get their hopes up that something is going to drop. Please don't listen to everyone tell you to smack the dog. Violence begets violence

Scold him, but remember, he is just a puppy.

Or roll up a paper very loosely, and whap him on his behind. Not hard, barely, it works :)
