It's the riddle of the Sphinx, solved by Oedipus: Man--who crawls as a baby, walks erect as a man, and leans on a staff in his old age.

Oh please. The answer is the man, it's the riddle from the Sphinx that it's giving to the travelers to pass if they get it. In the Egyptian religion the light gives life. The morning represents the birth and the baby walks on four legs (the two legs and the arms), the afternoon is the maturity and the adults are walking on the two legs, the evening represents the end of the day, old man, the third leg is just the staff that mostly old person use it to move.

Man. The Riddle of the Sphinx is an allegory; when a man is young (in the morning of his life), he crawls on all fours ("four legs"). In the afternoon (adulthood) he walks on two legs, and in the evening (old age), he uses a cane, his "third leg". Of course, this applies to women too.

A person. four legs=baby, a baby crawls on all fours, right? Two legs is the adult stage in life, when you are able to stand on two legs. The three legs is old age, because you walk with a cane, but still have two legs. there ya go!

Humans!

As infants we crawl, 4 feet.
As youths and adults we walk, 2 feet.
When we get old, we walk with the aid of a cane, 3 feet.

Yeah, it's a person. When you are young, you crawl. When you are older, you walk on two legs, and when you're old, you use a crutch, which, for some reason, they consider another leg.
