Self Harm is always a cry for help and is more often than not associated with some form of mental illness (however this is not always the case). Your friend needs help IMMEDIATELY, normally u first need to discover the root cause of the problem to aleviate the condition but from what you have said the root cause is already known.
I'm afraid there are no such things as "Retreats" as such to my knowledge for ppl who self harm.as there is always a reason for this action which needs to looked into first. Self harm and sucidal thoughts are most common when in conjuction with each other this is why she needs professional help.
You also mention domestic violence which i suspect is alot to do with the situation as i would thing this has been going on for quite some time. I find myself asking where this abusive relationship is,Is it at home with her parents or an abusive relationship with husband?. I have a feeling it may be at home due to ur comments regarding doctor and domestic violence teams. However , your friend needs help NOW...
Why cant she go to the doctors as she needs to be assesed by a therapist A.S.A.P, and only her own GP is in the position to refer her. Is your friend housebound in any way if so she could call her GP out for a domicillery visit (home visit ) though i sense this may not go down too well but only her own GP can get her the help she DESPARATELY REQUIRES and to do that she must see him/her as only they can begin to get her the help she needs.
Unfortunately there is no quick fix solution to this problem. It cannot be resolved without professional help and without it she will continue to get worse.
Your friend obviously confindes in you, therefore i URGE you to help her to go and see her doctor so they can begin to get her the help she requires A.S.A.P.
I wish u both the very best in the in the road that lies ahead of u both.

I don't know where your friend is based, but there is a sanctuary for the suicidal in London near Finsbury Park. It is a non-medical model support service and people can stay for up to 3 days at a time. I think that you can self refer, but you can give them a call on this number: 020 7263 7070. they also have a website for more info, I think it is www.maytree.org.uk, but you can search through google. I hope that your friend gets the help and support that they need. Take care.

See if Bristol Crisis Centre for women can help (0117 925 1119)

If your friend is a young erson (under 25) you could try giving Get Connected (0808 808 4994) a ring who sould have more options of things available

Yes - I'm a doctor and I can't watch any kind of surgery without fainting; I always thought it was about the blood, but now I think it's more seeing someone take a knife and cut into someone..............and yet I do it myself, and I cut myself fairly deeply.

There are 2 retreats in England but you have to be refer ed to go to them by a professional. I have been in a similar position and it is difficult.
I want the doctor who answered your question as mine. :)
(oncall_psyc_dr) Mine constantly tells me it is my responsibility.
