My sister is having her baby baptised soon, and our mother (the baby's grandmother) is going to be the God Mother (apparently she made some song and dance about it). I was wondering if anyone else had head of this before, as I find it really strange! I have never heard of a grandparent being a god parent!! It is going to be a Catholic christening.

Anyone can be a godparent as long as at least one godparent is Catholic and any godparent must agree to help raise the child in accordance with Catholic guidelines.

Any one can be a God Mother. My husbands dad and step-mother are my 4 kids God Parents. That is really just a way of assuring yourselves and the children that if something were to happen to the natural parents, that someone will be there to take over the roll as parents. It really can be anyone that the PARENTS choose. I'm not sure how the Catholic religion does things but I am assuming that it is the same idea. That you are announcing it to the church and before God that is who you have chosen in case you pass away.

It is normal in catholic christenings for the brides maid and best man from the wedding to be the childs god parents. If the couple are not married then it is usually their nearest relative of the same sex in their generation of the family, such as a sister, brother or cousin. I have never heard of a grand mother being a god mother before. Perhaps she has never been one before and thats why she wants to be. However its not really important, I am a god mother, i just buy my god daughter presents for he birthday and christmas, there are only 2 religious functions for a god mother (communion and confirmation) but my god daughter is too young to have made either yet.

That is really strange. The old idea of godparents in the Catholic church is that someone close in age to the parents that will raise the child as a catholic if something were to happen to the parents. Nowadays it's more of a tradition/ceremony. Too bad that Granny is taking away an extra present for the kid for the next 18 birthdays and xmas's (haha).

My sister just had her baby daughter baptised. Her husbands father was the God Father and I was the God Mother. I thought it was strange that the grandfather was the god father, but apparently it happens a lot.

There is no real rule to it anymore. In 'the olden days' god parents were the ones to take the kid in when his/her own parents were to die. It was like a life insurance. Picking grandparents would not be a wise choice.
Now it is just an honorary title and only the one given the honor cares about it.

Is it for this time of year? What season is it down there? iciness? i imagine black should be o.ok. see you later as you do not appear like you're going to a funeral. in spite of each and everything, that's meant to be a joyful party. notwithstanding, you do not prefer to gown in a way that would not in good structure your personality, both. You seem fairly responsive to the actual undeniable reality that you will be up the front, and also you'd be in diverse pictures. Black is o.ok., basically perchance not ALL black. Oh, and not in any respect sleazy, both!

No I have never heard of that before, the closest family relative I have heard of being godmother is an aunt, never the grandmother.

Never had experience of this myself but I suppose it does happen. I think it should be totally the babies' parents decision as to who they have
