when children write each letter, they are expected to start the stroke at the top line and go down to form the letter. why?

If they started at the bottom they would get crayon and ink all over their hands and shirts.

It depends on what letter the child is learning to write. Certain letters like M&N are easier to learn to write if you start from the bottom up. If a letter has a straight line (for example the letter B) Then you would start at the top and make the straight line down and then do the loops. It just depends what letter you are teaching the child to write.

In the English language we read and write from left to right, top to bottom, and front to back. Virtually all the printed materials we read have been laid out so that the reader must start at the top of the page and then read moving down it, going from left to right along each line starting at the front cover and then moving to the back cover. The basic components of our language, the letters reflect this pattern. Our alphabet doesn’t begin with Z it starts with A. I would also suggest that most people learn to read and write simultaneously.

So it looks correct and b/c we read from top to bottom, left to right. Kids learn to write before they learn to read usually, so you start them off writing how they will read. The two are very connected.

Because someone decided that is the way it should be done...Zaner Bloser & D'Nealian, whoever.. Anyway, I am a teacher and I don't worry about it. I try to teach them the "right" way, but if a child finds a way that works better for him/her, I don't sweat it. What's important is that they learn to write and with time that their writing have meaning.

Because if they started from the bottom, their hands would smudge their work.
