If it's just going to be a pet, get the one you like.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback without the ridge would certainly not be a good breeding animal as the ridge is a distinctive breed characteristic. It is a disqualifying fault.

However, this has nothing to do with temperament of the animal. And that is a wonderful temperament.

If you are only looking for a pet, get the male, neuter him and let him protect your home and family. I feel you can't do better in a large breed dog!

Why not consider adopting from a Rhodesian Ridgeback rescue? Often the animals there will be more affordable, and you have a ready-made resource to help you with breed information, training, hereditary issues and other questions you may have...

Unless you like the puppy stage (which is VERY labour intensive), you may be able to adopt a young adult dog which has outgrown the urge to pee on your carpet, destroy your favourite shoes and hump your best friend.

There may be a rescue in your area - Petfinder.com is an easy website to negotiate and has search criteria that just might lead you to your new best friend! And you can be happy in the knowledge that you may have save a life!

Please do your breed research! Rhodies are not a good "pet" for everyone... keep in mind that they were not developed to be housedogs...

well, limited registration just means that any offspring will not be eligible for registration, the dog himself is still registered with the AKC and can compete in AKC events. However, because he doesn't have a ridge, he would be disqualified in the show ring..but he could still compete in other events such as agility or obedience. If you are only wanting a family pet, you should choose the one whose personality best matches the needs of your family....I agree with another comment that ridgeback rescue is a great resource, particularly if you do not have your heart set on a puppy.

Unless you have big dreams of taking your dog to an AKC dog show or something like that, the papers shouldn't really matter. If you're just getting it for a pet, in my opinion, I would go for the cheaper one. Dogs are expensive enough to keep as it is. That extra $200 will buy a lot of puppy chow, or dog treats or toys.

U should get the one who is most healthy and has a higher toy drive. (Most interested in toys, a lot easier to train!!) Make sure the one u pick is friendly likes to play and is not aggressive towards his/her litter mate.

You should get the one from a pound that is going to get to be terminated next week.
