Anytime that a government is allowed to pass laws that legislate a person's behavior, nobody should be glad. Once a precedent to do so has been set, it makes it that much easier to do again and again. If you don't like smoking in bars and restaurants, don't go to those that allow smoking. We were given the freedom of choice in this country, but unfortunately, too many people would rather take others' choices away from them then utilize their own.

I personally think it is wrong. In Arkansas 3 days ago it went into effect where smoking is phohibited in all public places. Here is my issue if your gonna ban smoking then they need to ban the selling of tobacco also. I live in a small town and there is also no smoking in all the bars. I will say this the owners have felt a impact in there business already. Here is the part that gets me the most. I do not see them banning alchohal from bars yet there are many people that die everyday from people driving while intoxicated. I also feel it is invading my right for something they legally sell over the counter but they can tell you where and where not to do it.. geeze what is america coming to.. Kinda scary if you ask me.

As much as I believe this is a good idea (because I hate smoking), I also wonder at what point do we allow personal freedoms and I've even more amazed that people are more upset about this ban than other losses of freedom like the Patriot Act.
I'm please I can eat a meal in this state without having someone's smoke wafting over to me, and I hope to walk along the beach without seeing tons of butts on the sand. But what I find funny is that we keep piling taxes on cigarettes. There's a ballot initative that would increase the tax from 87 cents to $3.47, raising the average price per pack from about $4 to $6.55.
Backers of the measure say it will convince more Californians to stop smoking and bring in about $2 billion in new revenue. But the state may not get that much because cigarette tax hikes tend to be followed by increases in smuggling and other forms of tax evasion. These kinds of laws are so wrongheaded, sin taxes never work because you can't legislate behavior or addictions out of existence..
Oh and scruffycat? Californians are weird because we're healthy? I guess that's why Texans are the fattest peeople in the US? Have another Big Mac and a Camel...

I'm not a smoker...except when I get really, really depressed and want to end my life slowly....but, I'm not addicted to smoking.
But, every time it comes to a vote, I vote AGAINST a smoking ban.
Why criminalize it? It doesn't impair judgment. For me, second-hand smoke is a comfort smell. I grew up with it.
It makes sense that California would ban it. They are famous for weird "health-nut" stuff.
I don't think Texas will go for it any time soon. I certainly hope it never makes it's way across America.

I think that you are seeing yet another example of false news on TV.Where is the evidence against smoking? What law could they be using to ban smoking?Cigarettes should sell for twenty five cents a pack. They're now selling for three or more dollars a pack. The government would never impose such a high tax.It would be a case of the Government ruining corporations! They'll go right down the list of pleasures and we'll be stuck in deep repression.

I live in NJ and recently smoking has been banned from bars and restaurants.
I am a smoker, NJ has the highest cigarette tax in the country (aside from NYC) where I am paying 6.00 or more for a pack.
Why are cigarette smokers being picked on? Isn't this a free country? I am not hurting anyone else besides myself.
They tried banning drinking once too.

You can't smoke in a bar here in Florida if they serve food. I think its great! Bars that are just bars can still smoke. Which is cool, If I don't like the smoke I'm free to not go there. I have plenty of other choices where I can go.

I find it incomprehensible that smoking and smokers get the special treatment they do. Why are the rest of us expected to breathe polluted air to support someone else's addiction? Setting a weed on fire and buring it indoors and making everyone breathe the fumes is insane, why is this even an issue and why would ANYONE consider this acceptable behavior? I can't even burn leaves outside in my yard but a smoker can burn leaves in a crowded restaurant, who decided that makes sense?
I'll be very glad when we put smoking and anyone who "chooses" to indulge in it where they belong, far away from the rest of us who would rather just breathe.

VERY glad...hope it does, indeed, make its way across the USA...I abhor smoking of any kind.
Of course, the cigarette industry is a multi-million dollar industry, so smoking will never actually be banned from the entire public, unfortunately.

honestly i think it will only be a matter of time before the smokers get tired of being pushed around. i don't think that many have a problem smoking outside instead of inside, but i think the final straw will come when they start banning it outside. yes you heard me right, they have already started, claiming that one cannot smoke on health care property at all in some areas
