God was not saying that for Jesus' benefit. It was a Testimony before men that Jesus pleased him. A public seal of approval from God himself.

You'd need a self esteem boost, too, if you were related to the crazy guy who preached a bunch of nonsense every day in the desert. Imagine if they had Thanksgiving back then.

Jesus: Mom, would you pass the gravy?
Mary: Ask Cousin John. He has is.
Jesus: But he's nuts!
Mary: Just do it.
Jesus: Okay, fine. John, would you pass the gravy?
John the Baptist: Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!
Jesus: I wanted gravy, not your stupid bug paste. Jerk.
John: Who asked you, sinner? You're not even baptised yet.
Jesus: Who do you think you are, talking to me like that? Heads are going to roll for this. Just you wait. I have connections.
John: Just repent already.
Jesus: Guaaah! Mom, he's dunking my head in the gravy bowl!
Mary: John, stop baptising your cousin and eat your damned turkey!

It wasn't so much to boost Jesus' faith in himself as to boost our faith in Jesus. From that we can see Jesus had God's blessing, and wasn't just another guy pretending to be a savior for mankind. Its up to you whether you choose to believe the Bible on it or not, but that is how the Bible says it is.

It was not, and I have a feeling you know it, and are trying to get an argument from someone. I won't be that someone, but I will tell you this. God said "This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased" so the world would know that Jesus was indeed His son. Not everyone is overstuffed with pride, unlike yourself.

No. More like the proclamation a King makes in a kingdom of his people, calling heaven and earth to witness before the most portentious event in human history begins to unfold.

Yes...of course. Though Jesus The Christ was fully God He also was fully man. The mortal flesh needed the same encouragment that we all do. and it was also a public demonstration of support.

It was to show that through Jesus's obedience to God's will that Jesus was approved by God.

He spoke this message aloud so that those who witnessed would know that what Jesus had done, by being baptized was good in his eyes.

We following Jesus Christ in baptism by one holding proper authority also receive approval for our obedience by our Father in Heaven who loves us.

No -- boosting self-esteem is what American public schools are into nowadays, with their refusal to give kids flunking grades and eliminating "dodge ball" from gym class and whatnot.

I miss dodge ball ... !

When Gordon B. Hinkley says God is pleased with...whatever...it is to get people to do what he says. God didn't say anything. Some dude wrote "God said" what he wanted people to believe.
