Did non Muslims ever have complete rights under Islamic ruling?

I notice that non-Muslims have less rights than Muslims in most Islamic-ruled countries (Saudi, Iran, Sudan...etc). Even in more liberal countries such as Egypt, Christians have limited rights in building new churches (they have to get permit from the PRESIDENT) or even renovating their existing churches.

When I ask Muslims about this problem they always say that Muslim countries do not necessarily represent Islam and they say that the real Islam give FULL rights to non Muslims.

However, when I read a letter sent by Khalifa Omar (second succesor after prophet Muhammed) to Christians in Jerusalem, I found it is full of restrictions to their civil rights. Some examples are that they were not allowed to build new churches or to renovate existing ones, they had to wear special clothes to distinguish them from Muslims, they were not allowed to show any religious symbol in public... etc.

Does anyone know if it has ever happened that non-Muslims had FULL rights under Islamic ruling?

first yes this is right that some muslim countries r not represting islam. But here ,in egypt, i think we r equal in rights with christians. and they r allwoed to build their chrurches. and about taking permission from the president, hmmmm, actually i never heard about it.

i just wanna correct somethings, Khalifa Omar never ever did these things u said. who told u so?? Khalifa Omar allowed building churches, and allowed them to practice christianity freely without any restrictions..

you know what? during the crusade, the christians in palastine were being killed and slautered more than 3,000 killed, so they (i mean christians) they went and asked khalifa Omar to come to palastine to rescue them from the crusade.
cauze they know that real islamic ruling never diffrentiate between muslims and non muslims.
Even when khalifa Omar enterd palastine, he was in a church and it was Alzauhr (u know that muslims pray in certian times, right? and Alzauhr is a praying time) khalifa Omar was going to pray in the church he was in but he didnt , u know why? cauze he didnt want muslims to take the church from christians to pray in it as he prayed there... even jewish took their full rights in the islamic ruling.

IF some countries now diffrentiate, but God told us not to and also our prophet Muhammed (pbuh) and his followers.....

It's the same thing with here in the United States. Do we Muslims get full rights. We might. You never know. Yes there might be some conflict in other countries but thats EVERYWHERE.

Islam is a militant control cult. They can say whatever they want to the contrary, their worldwide actions speak louder than words.

They call them "fundamental extremists"...but define that statement.

Fundamental, basics

Extremists, taking extreme actions.

So, they take basic teachings of Islam to the extreme.

Why do you assume Muslims have full rights (in the American sense) in those countries. They have a number of restrictions themselves that we would consider un-American.

Muslims that say this is true.

Muslim countries and muslims themselves, that do not practice head collecting, is not of Islamic religion.
