she is very good about not leaving the yard when i'm there but i'm not sure if i really like the idea of it ( her being out there alone i know she needs her time and all theat jazz), but i know that she needs to go outside and learn things on her own. I was thinking of maybe waiting until she is four ( shes 3 now).

One good factor is where you live. Safe suburbs or harmful urban area?

Is your yard fenced? If so, I say go ahead (be sure to check up on the child regularly). If not, I would still stay with the child. When you are out in the yard, remind her the street is dangerous, try to tell her about "stranger danger" in layman's terms--"Sometimes there are badguys that want to take you away from Mommy and Daddy. So don't talk to anybody you don't know." Something along those lines. See if she gets it. Then I would maybe sit outside with her, watch her, see her reactions. Go with your instincts from there. Can she handle it?

Wow! 3 or 4 sounds really young to me. My daughter is one and im thinking more like 6 or 7. And that is just in our yard while im in the kitchen looking out the window. I think i was riding a bike without training wheels before i was playing outside by myself. Of course im sure my memories from that far back are pretty vague.

It is not really by age but by mentality. But 8 years old is a good base age.6 years old if you have a good clear view of them from the inside or if you have a fenced in yard.3 is still to young at earliest I would let them go out by themselves at 5 years old.

Are you ******* nuts? If you let a 4 year old outside alone, I hope someone reports you to the child abuse center! My 7 year old niece can't leave the front yard. You wanted the kid, now take care of it!! You can't be to careful in this day and age. Next you'll be one of those Mothers you see on TV crying cause they didn't watch their kid and it got kidnapped!!

I let my son out at 4 in the back yard with a gate. At 5 he could ride his bike in front of the house. You have to evaluate you child. Is she overly curious. Does she wander, talk to stangers. Also think of your neighborhood. Are there other kids out alone. No matter what you choose, always make sure you can see her.

Eighteen years old or when they leave home and go to college. Even then, they're not safe! Never leave them alone in the yard because this world has a lot of perverts in it! You may trust them but you cannot trust strangers with your child's life.

by herself?
depends on the neighborhood...you know busy streets, creepy neighbors, weird people walking around, and time of day
plus is there a fenced in yard? backyard? would you be looking out the window to check on her?
if the neighborhood is good, not busy, and you will be checking i would wait a little longer than 4...they are still babies then...they cant be alone until around 5 or 6...just my idea

I would NEVER leave my kids outside ALONE!! Not unless you feel like going on tv, crying, because some sick freak took your kid !!
If you live out in the middle of NO WHERE...maybe...
A big city....NEVER.....
The suberbs....NEVER......
Even if you have a fenced in yard, someone can jump over and take them! (Someone could be stalking your child and know your routine). You just never know.
So, NO, DON'T EVER LEAVE YOUR KID OUTSIDE ALONE.

Honey, there is NO alone time with a 4 year old. Please do not let your child out of your sight for many years to come. They are getting snatched out of fenced in back yards. You can not be too careful.
