Im a junior now in high school...and if i u ask me, i would DEFINITELY recommend the backpack w/ wheels and a bag. Two of them (k-3 and 4-6) should do for his whole elementary school time. They are great...especially since ur nephew is still growing...dont put too much strain on his back. the actual backpacks are best only during middle school and high school beacuse they are easy to maneuver in crowded hallways. So for the first 3 years of elementary school just get a roller backpack that is big enough for a folder and a work book (thats all my currently 7 year old sister used her backpack during kindergarden). Make sure the roller backpack will last ur nephew for 3 years and that it wont go out of fashion...preferrably get him one that has a picture of something he likes. (pokemon/basketball etc.)

One that is not too big. Not sure on specifics. But he is in Kindergarten. They do not have that much to carry around. You do not want anything that is going to be so big that is hurts his back. or is a nuisance to carry around. My advice, take him shopping. Let him pick one out. If it is a surprise, go more with what design to get him (i.e. Ninja Turtle, power Rangers, ect). This will mean more to him than the size. The size should be regualr just like every kid uses in my opinion.

Something that is big enough for a normal size piece of paper. They do have smaller backpacks for smaller children, but they can be hard to find and not the greatest price. My daughter used a regular backpack and did fine. We are also going to use it again this year for first grade.

it is not good to give children backpacks as it can make them stoop and have back problems in later life get a bag they can go over the shoulder as it evens the weight out and puts less strain on the spine
