He will let you know when he is tired. Just make sure if you are going far to bring water for him. Also you may want to try a low calorie food.

Well, in order to keep your dog healthy, you have to take him out for a 20 minute walk twice a day, 3 days a week at least. And as for the food, you have to watch what you're feeding him, and instead of giving him treats, play with him and reward him a ball or his favorite toy, or maybe even a walk.

My 3 year old can do 1.5 miles no problem daily. He usualy will nap about 1/2 an hour afterwards but is then back in action. My 14 year old has trouble after a couple hundred feet.

You are in luck! You can walk him until he lets you know he is tired and then pick him up and carry him home! Unfortunately for me, I had an obese shepherd/collie mix. When she got tired and refused to walk anymore I had to abandon her in a neighbor's front yard and run home and get my van and my kid and then drive back and shove her in the van!!! You should have seen the surprised look on the neighbor's face when I returned for the dog. She is now at a better weight!

A healthy chihuahua could walk all day. Because yours is out of shape though, walk him in the morning until he begins to be tired, then walk back. Repeat in the evening. Soon, the distances you can walk will be longer and longer.

Rather than trying to exercise him back into shape, you should check with your vet about how much and how frequent he should be fed daily. He will lose the weight easier that way and his energy will increase. Good luck.

As long as you play with him and try to get him energetic then all should be well. The most important thing is just playing with your dog. Animals as well as humans need attention and company, the more attention you give them, the more they will want to play
