You can become lactose intolerant as you get older. This is very common. A good way to replenish the bacteria in your gut that help digest lactose is to have a serving of yogurt every day. You may find that you can tolerate small amounts of milk or dairy products but not large amounts. You can also buy tablets at the pharmacy to help digest milk. You just swallow 1 or 2 befor having any milk products. I am lactose intolerant and 2 of my 5 children are as well. One has been since birth and the other became intolerant when he was 7. I cannot handle any milk at all, even the cheese on a slice of pizza, my 13 year old daughter used to be the same way , but can now handle up to a cup of milk at a time without pills.
It can run in families , but does not always. Certain ethnic groups are much more likely than others to be lactose intolerant. 95 % of chinese are lactose intolerant but only 15% of northern Europeans.

I don't know if it's hereditary but I have a similiar situation to yours.
I think you can also gradually become latose intolerant. When I was little I could drink as much milk as I wanted. Now I can't even get by one cup.

yes, as you get older you lose the bacteria in your stomach to help you digest, then you become lactose intolerant
