Fork over your life savings to the Church of Scientology, and you will know the "truth":
75 million years ago, extraterrestrial beings were sent to planet Earth by intergalactic ruler, Xenu, who then blew up the aliens with hydrogen bombs in a volcano (because molten lava just isn't enough to kill those pesky aliens).
The resulting explosion caused millions of alien spirits to be released into the air. The spirits were then trapped and brainwashed into believing in God and religion, Christ, Moses, Mohamed, Willy Wonka, and Sade.
Today on Earth, all the spirits of these aliens have attached themselves to our bodies, and are the root cause of all the false reality. These attached spirits are called Body-Thetans (or BT's).
In order to become cleared and get rid of those nasty BT's that are keeping you down, you have to be audited with a tool called an E-meter. To use it, you have to hold two metal rods in your hands, not in your mouth like Tom Cruise and John Travolta did during their first audit.
Sounds simply adorable, doesn't it? No wonder Tom Cruise loves them.

This hack science fiction writer, L. Ron Hubbard ("Battlefield Earth") just made it up. It started in 1950 as something called "Dianetics" and became "Scientology" in 1953. It is a wonderful (and frightening) example of how people will believe anything. The longer it lasts and the more popular it becomes, the more it undermines the contention that any religion should be given credence just because a lot of people have believed it for a long time.
I still long to see the "South Park" episode that lampoons Scientology. The episode "The Return of Chef" is a thinly veiled and even more scathing attack.

Well actually the whole basis of scientology as a philosophy is entirely relevent. People just watch tv and get there information from it. Anyway it is based on the idea that supressed memories hold the key to your suffering which for many it does.

Its a common question so that people can answer things they heard on the net. :)
Its also a self-help religion. They offer courses which are collections of lots of great methods from other sources on things like communication, study, self-confidence, shaking peer-pressure. Since the upper levels of it (if you want to go that far) can get into bringing out bad experiences, it had to be either a medicine or a religion when it first came out. Its also non-denominational (like many good religions are) which means that you can attend without having to accept their beliefs or give up any other religion you are part of.
You can see from any scientologist you know what kind of results it creates. If all the ones you know are the famous tv celebs then decide if you would rather be like them or other tv celebs you know.

Yes I know Scientologists. I even took one of their courses once. A communications course. Very helpful.

They just reran that episode of South Park that dealt with it. It would have given you the origins of this strange new cult.
It's the latest trend among Hollyweird celebrities. That and Kaballah, but that's another story for another question.
Anyway, stay away from it! Don't let them empty you of your life savings. You'll feel like an idiot one day.
