You try to explain that war is not simply a football game in which you pick a "side" and then cheer for your team. Yet, continually Americans think you need to choose your "side" in the Middle East. Now, with recent news regarding AlQaida's threat to wage a holy war against Israel, it seems many Americans think you need to choose one of two sides: AlQaida or Israel. In fact, news of this type seems to have as an ulterior motive trying to get more Americans to simply have a pro-war perspective that supports total destruction of the infrastructure of nations such as Iraq and Lebanon in an effort to quell Islamic terrorists. The articles are indirectly asking Americans if they want to be on the side that "wins" against terrorists. But in reality, nobody is "winning" with this faux war strategy. Instead, thousands of Iraqi, Lebanese, Afghani, and other CIVILIANS are actually the ones being killed. Why do Americans think "winning" at all costs is justifiable?

Okay, I can understand people being defensive about my not qualifying what I meant when I said "Americans." I do NOT mean to imply ALL Americans are obsessed with winning. I am saying the majority are, especially MALES. However, given the nature of how this question relates to war, it's very interesting that many people below are quick to make sure I'm not talking about THEM.

Probably because Islamic Fundamentalists have stated that they are hell bent on killing all infidels and destroy the US and it's allies in hopes of uniting the earth under Islam. It's hard for them to just sit back after 9/11, having been drawn into the fray in a most dramatic way. I think they should remain neutral in the on-going, neverending Israeli/Hezballah/Lebanon situation... otherwise they'll play directly into the hands of those who are just dying for the US to take sides with the Israelis, thus bringing together all Muslim countries, solidifying and uniting the hatred even more. There's a video from Kevin Sites on Yahoo, who states that after a missile attack in Lebanon yesterday, people were shouting down the USA...after an Israeli attack...so it's already starting.

The only thing that comes in after the Winner is the losers
You can not vacillate in a war you must take a side.If not then to me you become a collaborator. Some country's try to work both sides of the street and then you end up occupied because you didn't choose to defend what you felt was right.
We can not be neutral in war . Its impossible.

Hear hear!
Many many people in this country are too easily manipulated and persuaded by the media and how these situations are presented. Almost in a rudimentary "grunt oof, GOOD! grunt grunt BAD!!" kind of fashion.
Your question is two part though. And the American competitve nature can be explained by our economics, size, and fear that we can't stay the dominant world power that we think we are if we don't push to always win. It's a nice little rat race we've created for ourselves.

You're absolutely right! We shouldn't try to stop those groups of people that wage a war by trying to inflict the most deaths and casualties on people that aren't soldiers, or even involved in the politics of a government. We should just sit down, or stand aside and let them do whatever they see fit to show governments that they don't agree with a country's political policies.
BTW, George Carlin called, he wants his material back.

If America is not obssessed with winning, it will not be the most powerfull country in the world. This is the reason why people want to migrate to the US, because winning is what made America the Land of Opportunity and Democracy.

It's a speed thing. We don't like eating Muslim dust. Civilians lose their civilian status when they let chicken poop Muslim terrorists hide weapons in their home.
Why are you hiding behind women and children? You're cowards, and you're going down. George Bush will be out of office soon.
The next President will hunt you down. Repent. Did you know your virgins promised to you when you die are used, and were trained at "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?" I don't doubt that George Bush had a hand in that himself. Woo-haw, that's Texas Pfunny. You know, Bush is from Texas.

Most people come to the United States for economic success. This is why the concepts of "making it" and "winning" and "having it all" are so heavily ingrained in American culture and society.
